Are you riding true shoulder-in, or just leg-yielding?
In this clip, Leif explains how to ride a real shoulder-in on a straight line without pushing the haunches off the track.
He shows how to:
- Come to a straight line first
- Turn the shoulders in with a little inside flexion
- Use inside leg + outside half halt to keep the haunches on your line
- Avoid the common mistake of “shoulder-in” that’s really just leg yield
This becomes especially obvious on the centerline toward the judge, where they can see exactly whether your horse stays on the line or drifts.

Are you sitting with the first beat of canter?
In this video, Leif breaks down the three-beat rhythm of the canter and explains why the first beat is the moment your seat needs to be back in the saddle. When you can feel that first beat clearly, it becomes much easier to stay with the motion, time your aids, and ride smoother, more balanced transitions.
If canter sometimes feels bouncy, rushed, or out of sync, this kind of timing and seat awareness can change everything.

“Why is trot–walk so hard?!”
In this lesson, Leif works on one of the most deceptively difficult transitions: trot to walk. It’s so tempting to let the energy die at the last second, which makes the rider get popped out of the motion instead of staying with the horse.
Leif coaches his student to bear down more, lightly hug with the thighs, and “push into the wave” through the entire transition, so the trot doesn’t collapse and the walk stays soft and connected. They also touch on how trot–canter–trot asks different questions of the rider’s balance, but trot–walk often exposes whether you can truly stay in the flow.
If you struggle with keeping transitions smooth and connected—especially trot to walk—follow this page for more biomechanics-based dressage clips, or send us a message to ask about lesson availability in the Wellington / Loxahatchee area.
Not local? Leif also offers online lessons for riders with a Pivo or similar video setup, so you can work on your transitions and rider biomechanics from your own arena.
