The Cost of Workplace Conflict: A Wake-Up Call for Leadership

Conflict in the workplace is an inevitable reality that can lead to serious consequences.
The average employee spends about 2 ½ hours each week dealing with conflict, which results in a staggering $359 billion in annual losses for US companies.

Day-to-day pressures like tight deadlines and competing priorities often create fertile ground for conflicts to emerge. Combined with the diverse personalities in a typical workplace, it becomes clear why a negative or hostile work environment leads employees to leave their jobs.

If you're a Department Head or Leader, you might constantly search for ways to handle these issues but often come up empty-handed. Acknowledging the problem is the first step, but finding effective strategies to address conflict and foster a more supportive environment is crucial for building a cohesive and productive team.

By proactively investing in communication training, conflict resolution strategies, and empathetic leadership, you can help prevent minor disagreements from escalating into major issues, saving time, reducing turnover, and creating a more harmonious workplace culture.

It’s time to prioritize a healthy work environment and recognize its significant impact on individuals and the company.

Please share how you or your company handles workplace conflict.

You never know when you'll find a quote that sticks with you. Who would've guessed that in the middle of a massage, I’d hear one of my favorite nuggets of wisdom from my masseuse, Liz McLaughlan?

Before the massage started, we were chatting about weekend plans when Liz mentioned she was planning to chill out and have some alone time.

We talked about how important self-care is, and that’s when Liz dropped this gem: “Spending time with yourself is great, especially when you enjoy your own company.”

I couldn’t help but laugh! It was one of those simple but brilliant statements that just hit right. It’s so true—we all need that time to ourselves, whether it’s to recharge for the week ahead, manage stress, or just because we genuinely enjoy our company.

For me, alone time keeps me grounded and focused, especially with all the craziness in the world. People often ask how I stay so positive.

The answer? It’s all about self-care. Whether it’s a bike ride, a walk, some gardening, getting lost in a good book, or a massage—these moments give me the space to breathe and stay centered as a coach, wife, mom, and friend.

Now it's your turn—how do you stay grounded? Share in the comments!

Have you ever had a conversation in which you felt utterly frustrated because the other person didn’t understand what you were saying?

My husband, Jerry, and I had one of those moments while cooking a complicated dinner for our family.

We misjudged how long it would take to prepare everything, and with just 30 minutes before they arrived, the kitchen turned into pure chaos.

It felt like a scene straight out of The Bear—the stress was through the roof, there was way too much to do, and communication went out the window.

But looking back, it was funny.

It also reminded me of Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish.

Amelia’s boss told her to “draw the drapes,” instead of opening them, she drew a picture of them.

Miscommunication can be like that—no one’s really to blame; it’s just a classic case of two people thinking differently.

At one point, I asked Jerry to shake the soup, and he took the pot off the stove and started shaking it!

I had meant for him to shake the soup box, not the whole pot.

But instead of getting mad, we just started laughing.

The tension melted away, and somehow, we pulled it together just as our family walked in.

Dinner turned out amazing!

As a conflict resolution coach and facilitator, I work with people tired of feeling invisible and overlooked. I help them feel confident using their voices to feel heard and respected.

Miscommunication happens to everyone, and it’s not about assigning blame.

Sometimes, you just have to step back, laugh at the situation, and figure it out together.

What’s a humorous miscommunication you’ve experienced, even though it probably didn’t seem funny then?

Flack experience in Improv and life 10/14/2024

In one of my episodes of Kick Conflict to the Curb™, I had the honor of engaging in a thought-provoking conversation with the remarkable Andrea Flack-Wetherald, author of “The Funny Thing About Forgiveness.”

Together, we explored the profound synergy between improv and forgiveness. Her insights reshape how we approach our lives.
I invite you to watch this compelling short video, where Andrea shares a vital first step toward embracing the transformative power of forgiving others.

https://youtu.be/OwxnV34Pen0

Andrea shares that life is an improv performance; we were not given a script at birth. By embracing the improv principle of "Yes And," we cultivate a mindset of acceptance and autonomy.

This approach empowers us to acknowledge our experiences without judgment or denial. As Andrea emphasizes, forgiveness isn’t about erasing the past or burying our feelings.

Instead, it’s an act of courage that involves accepting what has happened and recognizing that we can shape our futures as we wish.

Thanks to Andrea Flack-Wetherald for being one of our favorite guests on the show.

I am truly honored to be part of the Coaching.com Summit and to gain invaluable insights from the world’s top coaches.

Molly Tschang delivered an unforgettable session, "Say it Skillfully: Saying What Needs to Be Said," challenging us to lean into the tough conversations that matter most.

Her approach embodies full-contact support—learning that happens only when you roll up your sleeves and do the work. Mastering the art of candid communication takes courage, practice, and a relentless commitment to growth.

Molly reminds us that being intentional means consciously choosing how you show up.

I share her passion for turning challenging conversations into opportunities for deeper understanding and connection. I can't wait to bring you more insights on intentional communication in future posts.

Beth Granger, I know that you are an empathetic communicator.
How do you use empathy to support those around you? What strategies do you use to create a safe space for meaningful conversations?

verbal aikido gain control during conflict 10/09/2024

Have you ever felt cornered in a conversation, like someone was verbally pushing you? Instead of resisting, the communication tool below offers a way to deflect pressure and neutralize tension.

In the short video clip below, you’ll hear firsthand how I’ve handled an angry person during challenging interactions. Diane Steen Bogino, President of Performance Strategies, interviewed me on her show, and we delved into the art of this highly effective communication approach.
https://youtu.be/0OsBmFHZMsQ

It’s about taking the energy from an aggressive statement and neutralizing the confrontation rather than escalating it. Imagine someone criticizing you, maybe even lashing out with frustration. Instead of resisting or becoming defensive, you respond, “You’re right.”

These two words can transform the interaction, taking the person by surprise and often diffusing the negativity. It’s not about giving in; it’s about acknowledging a piece of their point valid enough to bring the tension down.

This approach is not about agreeing with something you genuinely oppose. Instead, it’s about finding the truth in the statement you agree with.

Imagine someone at work, for example, accusing you of not being proactive enough. Instead of immediately defending yourself, consider the power of responding, “You’re right; I could be more proactive in that area.” The tension drops, and the potential confrontation turns into a productive dialogue.

Don’t use this technique if you disagree entirely with the other person. You’ll see the power of this communication technique after you become comfortable using it.
