Leadership doesn’t always have to be a big speech or motivational moment. Sometimes it looks like setting a standard through the smallest actions. With this athlete, we talked about simple ways he could encourage a culture of hard work on his team. One of them was incredibly basic.

After every play or drill, hustle. Hustle to get the balls. Hustle to clean up. Hustle back to start the next drill. And encourage your teammates to do the same. It sends a simple message: 𝐈𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐖𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭.

𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒔𝒎𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒎 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝒊𝒕𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇. And when you’re the athlete encouraging that standard, there’s another layer of accountability. You have to live it too. You can’t ask your teammates to hustle while you walk. You can’t preach hard work and then choose when you want to give it.

One of this athlete’s biggest stressors was wanting to come through in clutch moments. But when we dug deeper, there was something underneath that pressure. 𝐇𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧. So every time a big moment came up, it wasn’t just another opportunity to compete anymore.

It became:
“𝐼 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ.”
“𝑀𝑦 𝑡𝑒𝑎𝑚 𝑖𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑛 𝑚𝑒.”
“𝐼 𝑐𝑎𝑛’𝑡 𝑚𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑢𝑝.”

And suddenly, that one moment carried a lot more weight. So one of the strategies we worked on was simple: 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. Because labeling the situation as “clutch” can make the moment feel different and more important than everything that came before it.

But for a baseball player, the task itself hasn’t suddenly changed. It’s still a pitch.

𝑆𝑒𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑎𝑙𝑙.
𝑇𝑟𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛.
𝐸𝑥𝑒𝑐𝑢𝑡𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑎𝑐ℎ.
𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡’𝑠 𝑑𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑙𝑦 𝑖𝑛 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢.

We weren’t trying to make him care less about helping his team. We were helping him take some of the extra meaning away from the moment so he could focus on performing in it.

If your athlete struggles with pressure or feeling like they have to come through in big moments, send me a DM to learn more.
