No More Chicken Wings

When you’re hitting, don’t come in small with those chicken wings!

Get BIG and LONG with your arms. Turn in your approach so you can transfer your momentum and go UP instead of drifting forward.

A strong approach helps put you in a better position to attack the ball.

Should I Get a Wig?

Pink, red, or gray? These players definitely had opinions!

But I really wanted to know one thing: If they had the choice, would they do this volleyball clinic again?

YEAH!

Thanks for an awesome time, Colorado. Just GO!

3:50 AM… Colorado, Here I Come!

Up at 3:50 AM this morning to catch a flight to Colorado for an awesome weekend of volleyball clinics, September 12–13!

Volleyball families know all about those early tournament mornings! Do you love getting up early, or do you hate it? And which would you rather have: AM wave or PM wave?

I need some coffee. Colorado, here I come. Just GO!

Blocking Tips

Outside hitters, stay higher when you’re moving along the net so you’re ready to get up and block.

If you’re getting your elbows above the net, be careful with your press. Get up, reach over, and bend at the wrist to take away space without touching the net.

Keep working on the little details. They add up.

Helping a First-Year Coach

A first-year coach stopped me to say that my videos have been a huge help and inspiration during their first year of coaching.

I love hearing stories like this. Coaching for the first time can involve a lot of learning, and knowing that something I shared helped another coach along the way means a lot.

High five!

Read. Move. Dig.

One of the most important skills for a DS or libero is learning to read the hitter.

Watch the hitter’s shoulders, reach, and body position. Gather information and make a move before the ball is hit.

And don’t be afraid to make a thousand mistakes while you’re practicing! Every rep gives you another opportunity to read the hitter. The more reps you get, the better you’ll become at recognizing what you’re seeing and putting yourself closer to where the ball is actually going to be hit.

Read. Move. Dig.

4-Step Approach Timing

A lot of players ask me about timing their 4-step hitting approach.

Take your first step as the setter starts the set and your second step as the ball is set. Then wait for the ball to reach its peak before finishing your last two steps and going up to hit.

The steps matter, but so does WHEN you take them.

Is Equal Playing Time Really Possible?

A parent actually used a stopwatch to track how long her daughter was on the court. She was even counting how many times her daughter touched the ball compared with another player.

It's a great example of why playing time can become such a difficult conversation between coaches, players, and parents.

Coach Blase and I talk about The Playing Time Problem on the Coach Chijo Podcast.

The Basketball Hoop Volleyball Challenge

Here’s a fun volleyball challenge you can do when you're all by yourself.

Serve the ball into the basketball backboard, react to where it comes off, pass it up, then set it.

The unpredictable rebound makes you move, adjust and control the ball. See how many you can get in a row!
