Today's Vocabulary words

Port de bras-
Purpose-
1. To move from one arm position to another

Demi Plie' - Slight bend
The Purpose - 1. Used as a spring for a dancers knees to avoid injury when landing.
2. Used to for momentum to jump in the air.
3. Used to for momentum to turn.
4. Also used to loosen muscles and gain balance when done as an exercise in class!

Grande Plie' - Large bend

Tendu - Stretched
Purpose -
1. To prepare for turns
2. To prepare for a jump
3. To prepare for a kick

En Croix- In the shape of a cross

Degage' - Disengage
Purpose-
1. To warm up the feet and establish the workings of how the foot leaves and contacts the floor. (both short and long)
2. To establish the range of motion of turnout while leaving the floor and establishing length and connection. (long)
3. To have the control to stop kinetic energy of the working leg in time with music. (short)

Spotting- Eyes and head focuses on one spot
Purpose-

1.Help keep a dancer oriented and aware of the movement, direction and location in space during turns. Also, reduces dizziness

Fondu - to melt
Purpose-
1. Mainly used as an exercise
2. Sometimes used as momentum for sous-sus

Sous-Sus - Over under
Purpose-
1. To lengthen the entire body

Soutenu - sustained
1. It helps to build strength and can help to improve turnout, jumps and relevés
