NOW YOU KNOW!

History Alive Project promised readers a second Halloween fact: the word "hallow" comes from the old English "halig" which means "holy."

The word "eve" is a shortened form of the word "evening."

When one thinks of Halloween, you would probably think of celebrations such as making jack-o-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing or visiting haunted attractions.

Of course, lots of kids will wear costumes this weekend. What was one your favorite costumes as a kid?

NOW YOU KNOW!

The City of Westby has long been fans of decorating its Main Street! Its looks like back in 2008, these two Westby citizens, Hirum Lund and Mark Jacobson, did their volunteer work on the corner of State and Main Streets.

Fast forward to 2026 as the tradition has continued thanks to the energy and efforts of our current Westby Area Chamber of Commerce. What will fall 2027 bring for ideas to continue this terrific activity?

Did your organization or business "do" a Westby City light pole for Autumn fun? Thank you, Westby Area Chamber of Commerce, for getting the light pole idea from just an idea to making it all happen!

Fun fact #1 for Halloween: some traditions among some cultures choose to eat certain vegetables such as apples and potatoes pancakes on Halloween. Snickers candy bars are a perfect second choice if you are out of potatoes and apples!

NOW YOU KNOW!

As long as there have been school buses, there have been crews of very dedicated trained bus drivers; the Westby Area School District has been and continues to be no exceptional!

With the 3rd full week of October each year being designated as "National School Bus Driver Appreciation Week," History Alive Project volunteers treated the Westby drivers to homemade cupcake treats. While all of the District drivers are not shown here, HAP had nothing but appreciation for the miles of dedicated service they all give to their job every school day.

Shown are (l to r): Pat Mlsna, HAP volunteer Ruth Amundson, Gordon Prejean and Joel Strangstalien.

NOW YOU KNOW!

Do you remember the song "The Wheels of the Bus Go Round and Round?" That song appeared in December of 1937 and is still popular today. Do you remember the book series "Magic School Bus?" That series even became a TV series.

This week rounds off National Bus Drivers Week and History Alive Project knows you will really love looking at these images!

Who were your favorite bus drivers if you rode on one sometime during your school days? Do you have some rider stories that happened during those really snowy days? What was your assigned bus number? Do you have any special or funny stories about riding buses to away games? How long was your one-way ride to and from school?

History Alive Project sincerely thanks all of the WASD drivers who take care of our precious District kids each and every day!
Let's hear from you!
