It's Wildlife Cam Wednesday, and today instead of a picture from a wildlife camera, we have one shared from our volunteer Mike Clark! Can you see the 🦉Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus)? This specific owl has begun nesting at Standley Lake, and we are honored! These owls are some of the earliest species when it comes to beginning their mating ritual. In the winter months, males establish a territory and can be heard excessively hooting trying to call for a female! Once an owl finds their mate, they are together for life!

Friendly Neighbor Friday!
A big thank you to Janet for sharing the beautiful photo of a Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto)! Fun facts: These doves can drink water without needing to tilt their heads back, unlike most birds. They’re also known for their steady, direct flight and frequent perching on power lines and rooftops. Listen closely and you may hear their distinctive three-part coo throughout the day.

🦨 Wildlife Cam Wednesday: Striped Skunk Edition!
Say hello to one of Standley Lake’s most recognizable nighttime neighbors, the striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis)! These adaptable mammals are mostly nocturnal and have an excellent sense of smell, helping them find insects, small rodents, berries, and even bird eggs. Their famous black-and-white coloring serves as a warning to predators: “stay back!”

It's📸 Wildlife Cam Wednesday and we have a first time ever species, a Beaver (Castor canadensis) 🦫! Westminster is home to a lot of large ponds, lakes, and waterways, creating an amazing opportunity for Beaver habitat! Did you know in the fall season, beavers begin preparing their winter cache? A cache is a term used referring to a food storage, and in the wintertime beavers cache things like twigs and branches of willows, in an underwater "storage unit". Once the water freezes over, the beaver can swim to its cache, grab some food and swim back to its lodge remaining concealed and not vulnerable to predators.
Thanks to our amazing open space team for this rare capture!

🦅🦅Eaglet Update🦅🦅
As you all may remember, this past summer, we had an eaglet injury, and we have recently gotten an update on its recovery. The eaglet is still being held at the rehab, growing back it's feathers from the injury and continuing to work on flying! Although this news isn't very different from the last, we want to thank the rehab for their hard work and continue to keep everyone here who love the eagles updated! This will be a long journey but hopefully will result in an Eagle that's healed and being released into nature!
