I swear everyone at open play is a character. Open play is how I started playing pickleball. It’s a crazy feeling to step into a space like this as an adult, looking around, trying to get a sense of how things work and if you’ll be accepted there. And then to have that transform into a place where you’re asking people about how their kids are doing or how their mother is holding up, with inside jokes and rivalries and birthday parties at 8am.

What’s open play like for you?

THE coolest thing about Pickleball is how you can go to basically any major city in the world and all of a sudden you have a community you belong to. That makes the world feel smaller and more lovely.

A year ago Casey and I went to Copenhagen and I found what I believe was the only true open play in the country at that time. It was awesome. There were grandparents playing with grandkids, expats, and locals. Here’s what it looked like!

Oh and also I was really inspired by how this one guy (I think his name was Mike but it’s not pronounced that way) decided to bring the game to his city, and take the time to haul these nets over every day on his bike, and teach the community. It was so cool!

This makes me want to travel and highlight open plays all around the world. Anyone want to make a travel show with me?
