Last year, Wareham native Curtis Merritt (The Kittansett Club) found his way to the Howard University golf team, which was revived after a half-century thanks to a donation from NBA star Steph Curry. The golf program was featured in a docuseries — ‘Why Not Us: Howard Golf — currently streaming on ESPN+.

Howard has long been recognized as the Harvard of historically black colleges & universities (HBCUs), and Merritt has helped raise the profile of this blossoming program, which has brought in talented minority golfers from across the country. But performing well on the golf course is only part of the program’s larger purpose.

“We want to inspire the next generation of black golfers to pursue their passion for the sport. Diversity in the sport of golf is a big thing for us. Everyone deserves the opportunity to participate in the game no matter your background or ethnicity, everybody should have an opportunity.”
