𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽?

Not everyone will be able to respond to a fire alarm in the same way.

Young children may sleep through an alarm. Older adults may need more time to move. A person with a disability may need assistance.

Someone visiting your home may not know the escape plan at all.

Good preparedness accounts for the people who may need additional help before an emergency happens.

Think about who may need assistance, what kind of assistance they may need, and who will be responsible for helping.

Don't leave that decision for the moment the alarm sounds.

𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗠:

Identify anyone in your household who may need help escaping and
include that assistance in your fire plan.

Having a home fire escape plan is important.

Practicing it is what turns the plan into action.

A fire drill helps everyone understand what they are expected to do. It can also reveal problems you might not discover by simply talking about the plan.

Can everyone open the doors and windows they may need? Does everyone remember the meeting place? How long does it actually take to get outside?

Don't wait for an emergency to find out.

𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗕𝗘𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗠:

Conduct a home fire drill. Time how long it takes everyone to get outside and reach your meeting place.

Then talk about what worked and what you could improve.

Everyone made it outside.

Now where is everyone?

During a fire, family members may escape through different doors or windows. Without a plan, people may scatter or someone may believe a family member is still inside.

Choose a family meeting place outside your home and a safe distance from the building. Make it easy for everyone to recognize: a mailbox, tree, neighbor's driveway, or another permanent landmark.

Once you're outside, stay outside and go to the meeting place.

Knowing that everyone has escaped also provides valuable information to arriving firefighters.

𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗪𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗢𝘂𝘁

You probably know exactly how you normally leave your bedroom.

But what happens if that route is blocked by smoke or fire?

A home fire is not the time to start looking for another way out.

Everyone in your household should know at least two ways to escape from sleeping areas whenever possible.

Walk through your home and look at it differently. Consider doors, windows, stairs, and obstacles that could affect your escape. If children are old enough, involve them in the conversation.

A familiar home can become an unfamiliar environment very quickly when it fills with smoke.

A working smoke alarm does something incredibly important during a fire: it gives you time.

Time to wake up.
Time to recognize the danger.
Time to get your family moving.
Time to get outside.

Don't assume your smoke alarms are working because you can see them on the ceiling. Test them.

Check alarms throughout your home, including sleeping areas, and make sure everyone in the household recognizes what the alarm sounds like and knows what to do when they hear it.

Those few minutes of preparation today could matter when seconds count.
