Rielyn shares how she’s adapting her practice during pregnancy below. 💕
Pregnancy has definitely changed my practice, but it’s also taught me a lot about what yoga actually means beyond the poses.
1. I’ve had to SLOW DOWN and that’s okay.
I’ve always been all about the heat, strength, and intensity. One of the biggest lessons pregnancy has taught me is that slowing down doesn’t mean I’m doing less. My journey with yoga has given me the awareness to meet my body where it is and recognize what level of practice is appropriate for me today.
2. Educate yourself, but listen to your body.
There are a LOT of rules, recommendations, and opinions about practicing yoga while pregnant. Take them into consideration, educate yourself, and understand the reasons behind them. But also learn to listen to your own body. Pregnancy looks different for everyone. If something doesn’t feel right, I don’t force it. If something feels good and safe for me, I let myself enjoy it.
3. Modify, make room for baby & use the props!
My chaturangas, wide legged uttanasana, malasana, and plenty of other poses don’t look the way they used to. And they shouldn’t! My body is making room for another human. Widen the stance, grab the blocks, use the wall, take the modification, or skip the pose altogether. The goal isn’t to make my pregnant body fit my old practice. It’s to let my practice evolve with my pregnant body.
And through all of it, I come back to my breath.
I find a gentle, steady breath that feels safe and let that set the pace of my practice. When I start pushing beyond what feels appropriate, my breath is often one of the first things to tell me.
Pregnancy has made my practice slower, softer, and different, but maybe that’s part of the yoga too.
