The most traditional or common martial arts forms practiced in modern mixed martial arts are Boxing, Kickboxing, Muy Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Karate, Greco Roman Wrestling, and Judo.
Did you know that, in the early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, there were no weight classes or rounds? Fighters were literally in the octagon (eight-sided cage) until a winner was declared.
Modern mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place in Europe, Japan, and the Pacific Rim in the early 1900s.
A physical fitness routine does not need to be overly strenuous in order to be beneficial. Participating in moderate-intensity exercises is vital to a healthy lifestyle. People of all ages and social groups will benefit from being more fit and active.
A regular fitness routine helps to reduce stress, depression, and feelings of anxiety by stimulating the production of endorphins in a person's brain, namely the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. Endorphins resemble opiates, acting to relieve pain and produce feelings of well-being.
Regular fitness exercises will help people with arthritis, tendonitis, and other chronic, disabling conditions by raising their stamina and muscle strength. A regular fitness routine will enable stricken people to perform daily life activities and improve their psychological state.
Teenagers who observe a regular fitness routine will have improved strength, develop lean muscle, and reduce body fat. Regular exercise will lead to sturdier bones that will last a lifetime. But more than a third of teens from grades 9-12 neglect to engage in regular physical activity.
Older adults would benefit greatly from following a regular fitness regimen. Aerobic exercises will lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of health risks like heart disease, colon cancer, diabetes, and stroke. Muscle-strengthening exercises will lessen the possibility of falling and breaking bones.
Mixed martial arts fighters gain victory through using a variety of striking and grappling techniques. They must train in a variety of styles in order to fight effectively whether at close quarters, long distance, standing up, or on the ground.
In 1993, Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter Royce Gracie won the first Ultimate Fighting Championship tournament when he defeated three opponents in about five minutes. Gracie's victory served to spark the emergence of professional mixed martial arts in the United States.
Since 1985, Japan had its own modern mixed martial arts sport through shooto matches. Shooto fighters can defeat opponents by knockout or submission. They are allowed to use punches, kicks, knee strikes, grappling, joint locks, chokes, takedowns, and throws.
In the 1900s, mixed martial arts matches in Japan were called merikan (American fighting). Merikan matches were fought under different sets of rules such as victory by submission or knockout, best of three knockdowns or throws, and points decision.
Edward William Barton-Wright founded the mixed martial arts system of Bartitsu in London in 1899. Bartitsu was the first system to incorporate European and Asian styles, combining elements of boxing, savate, French stick fighting, jujutsu, and judo. Barton-Wright promoted MMA matches in England between Japanese and European fighters.
Bruce Lee popularized the combination of different fighting arts in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Lee believed that the best fighter is someone who can adapt to any style, to be formless. Lee is considered the father of mixed martial arts.
Mixed martial arts is a full contact fighting sport. Fighters from different fighting disciplines can use a whole range of punching, kicking, and grappling techniques. Rules were minimal at first, but more rules were steadily added for safety. Mixed martial arts now rivals wrestling and boxing for popularity.
Mixed martial arts matches began in Europe and the Pacific Rim in the 1900s. The combat sport of Vale Tudo emerged in Brazil in the 1920s. It was introduced to the United States by the Gracies, a Brazilian sporting family, who founded American mixed martial arts.
Aerobic fitness conditions a person's heart to pump blood more efficiently throughout the body, enabling the maximum amount of oxygen to reach the body's organs and muscles. Aerobic fitness allows people to perform better during an extended physical activity.
Physical fitness offers people benefits like greater energy and a happier emotional outlook. It also reduces the risk of illnesses like lung cancer, stroke, diabetes, and heart disease. An aerobic exercise routine of 3 to 5 times a week for 20 to 60 minutes per session is recommended.
Cardiovascular fitness is also termed aerobic fitness. Cardiovascular fitness depends on the ability of the body's respiratory and circulatory system to provide oxygen to muscles during an extended physical activity. Regular exercise maximizes the efficiency and performance of these systems.
Physical fitness is required for serving in virtually all military services and sporting activities. Many military personnel undergo fitness training to prepare combat and other physically demanding activities. Athletes train to build up the necessary stamina to compete in their sports.
