The NWTFS Pistol Club traveled to Canton, Ohio and Camp Perry, Ohio to be part of the Texas Precision Pistol Team in the 2026 National Pistol Matches.
Roger Kroes led our delegation. Charlie Norwood was our veteran Junior on his third or fourth trip to the Nationals since he was 12. Tosh Bennett was attending her first Nationals after a whirlwind of training the last five months. Joseph Sklar of Louisiana rounded out the Texas, Junior Team.
Nannette Davis was den mother on this trip.
The three days in Canton were preparation for a grueling week of shooting in the Nationals in Camp Perry. Charlie edged out Tosh by a fraction on the three day averages. Both shot slightly above 77%.
During the early competitions at Perry Charlie pulled ahead in one event then Tosh had a breakout score in another.
Have not totalled the other Junior scores but Tosh had a high of 83+% and an average of 80.80% for all the non Excellence In Competition matches. Good scores for somebody who first tried Bullseye Pistol in March. This is what NWTFS youth programs can do.
Canadian forest fire smoke shut down competitions for two days and deprived our shooters of completing some aggregates .
The National Trophy Individual match was the one competition our shooters got to shoot on Saturday. Tosh fired a very respectable 244/300.
2,600 mile round trip and a steep learning curve for Tosh and Nannette. Both want to see Camp Perry again next year. The group got home tired and happy to back in Texas. Lots of stories to tell. Jon Scales created a Shooter Mom tiara for Tosh to present to Nannette. A much appreciated perk.

July 4th was the 34th annual Don James Memorial High Power Rifle match.
We began these special July matches after the Gulf War to honor our military personnel as well as to celebrate America, our freedoms and our rights.
When Don James passed on we saw him as a person who had defended the nation as a Colonel in the Texas National Guard, defended both the First Amendment and the Right to Keep and Bear Arms as a founder of the NWTFS High Power Rifle Club and as editor of the local newspaper.
He was our friend. Several James family members have competed with over the decades. His brother took on the task of providing meals for the event at no cost. Now his grandson lead that contribution. We are not simply keeping a name alive. We are keeping his spirit of duty and love of country alive.
This is our day to compete, remember and look forward.
The young people we train now will be carrying on these skills and ideas long after we have passed on. If we give them nothing else, their ability and desire to defend America in word and deed is the key to bright future.

We has 13 competitors in two relays. Jon Scales did the Iron Man by shooting a different rifle in each relay. Team Scales has two shooters while Team Davis had four. Ages on the firing line went from 15 to 77.
Roy Woodman won our finest prize of the day, the Veterans award.
Jon Scales earned Match winner.
James Lovingier took First Expert
Charlie Norwood was first of three Junior competitors.
Mark Johnson took First Marksman.
Tosh Bennett claimed First Woman.
Brian Davis managed a First Vintage Rifle with an M1 Garand.
