What do you do when you feel so good about something, you just can't hold it in any longer?

Write a poem.

At least that's what Jan from the Hutchinson YMCA did recently to celebrate the special relationship she's built with her trainer, Mindy Gloria.

Her words are fun, witty, relatable and reflective of how connections are at the heart of the YMCA:

I didn't want to exercise at the Y.
I'd rather stay home and eat pie, read books, paint, and pet cats!
But to improve balance and health, I had to face facts!
Mindy, my trainer, with lots of smiles
put Gary, Lori, and me through tricks from her files!
Mindy knows exercises for every body part.
Encouraging and challenging, she soon won my heart!
Week by week we carried weights through the halls.
"Superman" and "birddog" and throwing balls.
We moaned, laughed, bonded and sweat.
When we left class we were proud...and wet!
You know a thousand ways to exercise, You made our strength and balance rise!
Thank you, Mindy, you're an amazing athlete!
As trainer (and MOM) you can't be beat.

This past summer one of our instructors, Mr. Derek, was able to accomplish a swim milestone with a long-time student of his, this is what he had to say about it

"One of my students has progressed from only staying in the water for 20 minutes to being able to swim-float-swim all the way to the wall on her own. Seeing her grow and build confidence is one of the best parts of my job." -Derek

Instudio is easy to use and available in Studio F

When no classes are running, you can use this feature. Use the tablet as shown here by our members in the photo: search for the video you would like to use and press play. It’s that easy!

These members used to have a Stretch and Roll class, but the instructor wasn’t available for the next season. They had already fit it into their regimen, and instead of letting the cancelled class ruin their routine, they started using the InStudio equipment regularly together to keep their schedule going and still keep the “group” exercise going.

You'll want the sound on for this video featuring ESPN Wichita 92.3's Pat Strathman and the Y's Catherine Seals.

The topic was YMCA youth sports and how any adult can explore volunteer sports coaching opportunities at our branches.

FACT: Volunteer coaches don’t need to be professional coaches or former athletes to make a difference. The YMCA provides training, so no experience is necessary.

ANOTHER FACT: Volunteering can fit different schedules and interests. There are opportunities for people who want to coach, assist a coach or simply lend a hand.

We’re currently looking for coaches for the Fall II sports season (all applicants go through a thorough screening process).

Contact the sports director at any one of our 12 branches to get involved so every child has a team to play on.

💙 Staff Spotlight- Youth & Family: Jade! 💙

Meet Jade! Jade is one of our amazing Kid Zone Shift Leads!

Jade is a proud mom of 5 kiddos and has been a member of our Kid Zone team for the last 2 years. During her limited free time (5 kids!) you can find Jade outside enjoying the sunshine and exploring the outdoors.

Jade says that her favorite thing about working at the Y is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with our kiddos. She enjoys giving special attention to the kids who may have a hard time initially leaving their parents at drop off. Seeing them become more comfortable, confident, and excited to be in Kid Zone is one of the most rewarding parts of her job!

Jade also has lots of love for the amazing ladies she gets to work alongside in Kid Zone. Her team makes every day even more special!

We’re so grateful for the joy, patience, and heart Jade brings to Kid Zone. Thanks for all you do, Jade! 🌟

Belonging is defined as the deep human need to feel accepted, valued, and safe in a group or place.

We notice belonging in the Water Arthritis Luncheon at the Northwest YMCA. Here are two new members who have found their people. These sisters, Barbara and Marthanna, have only been coming a couple of months to our water classes here. They say, “This is the friendliest group of people who care about others.” The group extended the invite to these 2 sisters as fall started and the luncheons began again to make sure they would feel included and to be able to get to know them better outside of class.

This is what belonging looks like at the Northwest YMCA. And fun fact: what made them feel even more welcome is that there are 4 sets of sisters who attend class together.

Water arthritis at NW is M/W/F from 10:45-11:30am in the family pool, and the luncheons are the 1st Wednesdays of the month, potluck style, at Noon in Studio B.

Everything we do at the YMCA is centered around improving lives. Our nonprofit mission is as big as it gets, and it’s something we can’t do alone.

Our sincere appreciation goes out to HCA Healthcare, parent company of Wesley Healthcare, for its generous support of our LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program that helps cancer survivors take back their strength, independence and hope for the future.

Yesterday, Bill Voloch, President & CEO of Wesley Healthcare, and Dave Stewart, Director of Communications & Community Engagement at Wesley Healthcare, presented the YMCA with a $25,000 check that will make it possible for nearly 100 individuals to attend 12 weeks of future LIVESTRONG at the YMCA sessions at area YMCA branches. Donations like this allow us to continue offering LIVESTRONG at the YMCA free of charge to anyone, at any point in their cancer journey.

A gift like this will impact so many lives, and we’re incredibly grateful to partner with HCA Healthcare and Wesley Healthcare to strengthen our community.

Thank you!

Let’s improve our knee health and healing this September

Many of our members struggle with knee problems or have had replacements.

Hunter (personal trainer) shows us how to use the Hiitmill over by the track to strengthen our knee joints.

Now is the time to improve ourselves, set new goals, and strengthen our bodies.

What are you doing this September to improve yourself? Share with us in the comments!

9/11 is one of those rare moment's in our nation’s history where you remember exactly where you were when the news broke. The images permanently etched into our collective memories.

Today, on its 25th anniversary, we pause to remember the 2,977 people we lost. They will never be forgotten.

Year after year, we are honored our YMCA branches have been gathering places for individuals throughout our community to take part in the 9/11 memorial stair climb tradition.

110 floors, 2,200 steps, representing the height of the World Trade Center towers.

Each climb honors the 343 FDNY firefighters who gave their lives while helping others on September 11, 2001.

Coming together, we honor their sacrifice and carry their memory forward.
