We’ve built your guide to a Midwest RV Toad trip that’ll be fun and unique!
Start in the foothills of Appalachia in Ohio, at Hocking Hills, and work your way to the Lake Erie coast to Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Drive along Lake Erie and into Michigan, and stop at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore before you drive across the Mackinaw Bridge and into the Upper Peninsula to see Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Drive along the Door County Coastal Byway in Wisconsin to see some true natural wonders and drive down to Devil's Lake State Park.
After some relaxation at Devils Lake State Park, start your drive to Split Rock Lighthouse in Minnesota. After seeing the beauty of Lake Superior, drive inland to the Superior National Forest for some great hiking. Drive on down to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota to see where the Great Plains meet the Badlands. While driving out of North Dakota, don’t forget to drive through the Enchanted Highway of Sculptures. Continue seeing the beautiful Badlands by driving down to Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Drive through the anxiety-inducing Needles Highway to begin the next leg of your journey.
In Nebraska, join up with the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway to get a tour of all Nebraska has to offer on this 272-mile national scenic byway. Drive into Missouri to depart from the flat lands of Nebraska for hills and lakes at the Lake of the Ozarks State Park and the Lake Ozarks region.
Begin your drive back to Ohio by going to the Maquoketa Caves State Park in Iowa to see natural wonders unlike anywhere else, before going to Pikes Peak State Park to look over the mighty Mississippi. Drive into Illinois to see Starved Rock State Park, home to unique Sandstone Canyons formed by glacial meltwater. Afterwards, visit the National Natural Landmark of Mississippi Palisades State Park to see one of the few sections of preserved Mississippi Palisades. Drive up to the Indiana Dunes National Park to see the natural beauty of the Great Lakes and their dunes. End your trip at Chain O’Lakes State Park to see 15 interconnected lakes, the perfect way to end your sightseeing tour of the American Midwest!
Here’s to campfires, mountain views, and making memories on the road. 🏕️🚐
