Thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time?

We know your first class can feel a little intimidating, especially when you don’t know what to expect.

So we put together a quick guide with everything you should know before stepping onto the mats. From what to wear to basic hygiene and safety tips, we’ve got you covered.

And remember:
❌ You don’t need experience.
❌ You don’t need to be in shape.
❌ You don’t need to know what you’re doing.
❌ You don’t need to have a gi.

You just need to show up, be willing to learn, and give it a try.

The whole is only as strong as its parts. A gym is no different.

It isn’t uncommon to see academies with 70, 100, or even 200 students, yet only a handful are willing to step onto the competition mats. Competing demands something that can’t be borrowed or faked: the willingness to have your preparation measured in public.

Ethos Jiujitsu has been open for less than three years, and I couldn’t be more proud of where we are. More importantly, I couldn’t be more proud of the people who choose to represent it.

These students don’t just train. They accept uncertainty. They risk failure. They trade comfort for growth. That alone separates them from the many who are content to talk about how they would perform instead of finding out.

An academy is not built by its instructor alone. It is built by the character of the people who walk through its doors every day.

They are as much Ethos Jiujitsu as I am, and today they represented it well.

The hardest submission to escape is your own ego. 🧠

Too many athletes ruin their longevity because they refuse to tap in training. As Roger Gracie puts it, resisting past the point of no return doesn’t make you tough… it just gets you injured.

How do you view tapping in training? Is it a loss, or is it just data? Let’s hear it in the comments.👇
