🤔 THINK ABOUT IT THURSDAY: SATURDAY DEBRIEF
This week we asked a hard question.
A friend tells your teen something that worries them.
Maybe they're meeting someone they only know online.
Maybe they're going somewhere their parents don't know about.
Maybe they're getting into a car with someone unfamiliar.
And then...
“Promise you won't tell anyone.”
So what should they do?
First, we need to teach our kids an important distinction:
🔐 Privacy and dangerous secrets are not the same thing.
Being a good friend means respecting someone's privacy.
But when a friend may be unsafe, threatened, exploited, planning something dangerous, being harmed, or talking about harming themselves or someone else...
Safety outranks the secret.
❤️ SO HOW CAN A FRIEND HELP?
Listen without judging.
Ask simple questions:
“Are you safe right now?”
“Do you need help?”
“Is someone pressuring or threatening you?”
Encourage them to tell a trusted adult and offer to go with them.
If they're afraid to tell their parents, help them identify another safe adult: a teacher, counselor, coach, relative, school administrator, or someone else they trust.
If you believe they're in immediate danger, get an adult or emergency help involved even if they tell you not to.
You don't have to investigate it yourself.
You don't have to confront the person involved.
And you don't have to carry it alone.
😔 “BUT I SNITCHED ON MY FRIEND...”
A young person may do exactly the right thing and still feel terrible afterward.
Their friend might get angry.
They may stop talking to them.
Other kids may call them a snitch.
That's when they need to hear:
Getting help for someone you care about isn't betrayal when you're worried about their safety.
You can feel guilty and still have made the right decision.
Talk to a trusted adult about what happened. They can help you carry some of that weight too.
❤️ AND ADULTS... THIS APPLIES TO US TOO.
If a friend, coworker or family member tells us something that makes us genuinely concerned for their safety, we face the same decision.
Sometimes caring about someone means having an uncomfortable conversation, checking on them, helping them find support, or speaking up when staying silent would be easier.
Our kids are watching how we handle these moments.
If we want them to understand that protecting someone can be more important than keeping a dangerous secret, we have to model it too.
❤️ PARENTS, THIS PART IS OUR JOB.
We can't tell our kids, “You can tell me anything,” and then make honesty terrifying when they finally test whether we meant it.
Have the hard conversations before there's a crisis.
Ask:
“If your friend told you something scary and made you promise not to tell, what would you do?”
“What if YOU made a bad decision and needed me?”
“Who could you go to if you weren't comfortable coming to me first?”
Then make sure they hear this:
“You can call me.”
“You can tell me the truth.”
“You can tell me when you messed up.”
“You can tell me when your friend needs help.”
There may still be consequences or difficult conversations later.
But first:
Are you safe?
Where are you?
What do you need?
Get them safe first. Talk tomorrow.
📚 LESSON LEARNED:
Know when a secret becomes a safety issue.
Sometimes being a good friend means keeping someone's confidence.
Sometimes being a good friend means being willing to lose their trust temporarily rather than risk losing them.
And that's a lesson that doesn't have an age limit. ❤️
🧠 Awareness gives you options. Options give you time. Time can save your life.

🤔 JULIE'S THINK ABOUT IT THURSDAY

🎒 BACK-TO-SCHOOL EDITION

Your teenager is hanging out with a friend after school.

They're talking, joking around, everything seems normal.

Then their friend gets serious.

They tell your teen something that worries them.

Maybe they're planning to meet someone they only know online.

Maybe they're going somewhere they haven't told their parents about.

Maybe they're getting into a car with someone your teen doesn't know.

Then comes the sentence:

"Promise you won't tell anyone."

Your teen doesn't want to betray their friend.

They don't want them mad at them.

They don't want to overreact.

But something about it doesn't feel right.

🤔 WHAT'S THE FIRST THING THEY SHOULD DO?

And maybe the bigger question for us as parents is...

Have we taught our kids the difference between keeping a friend's confidence and keeping a secret that could put someone in danger?

Being a good friend doesn't always mean staying quiet.

Sometimes it means being willing to have someone angry with you because you cared more about getting them home safely.

Talk about this one with your kids.

Ask them:

"What kind of secret would be too important to keep?"

Then listen before giving them your answer.

Because we don't just want our kids prepared to recognize danger when it's happening to them.

We want them prepared to recognize it when it's happening to someone they care about. ❤️

🎥 PREPARED ISN’T PARANOID.

Being prepared doesn’t mean you live afraid something bad is going to happen.

It means you’ve already thought about what you’ll do if it does.

👀 Where’s the exit?
📍 Who knows where you are?
⚠️ What changes when something doesn’t feel right?
🚪 When do you leave?
🥊 What happens when leaving isn’t an option?

Preparation isn’t buying a piece of equipment and assuming you’re ready.

It isn’t watching a video and thinking, “I know what I’d do.”

Because knowing and doing are two very different things when stress enters the room.

Prepared is practiced.

You practice awareness.
You practice making decisions.
You practice leaving early.
You practice using your voice.
And when necessary, you practice fighting to get home.

That’s why we train.

Not because we expect the worst.

Because if the unexpected happens, we want you to have more than hope to fall back on.

📣 This morning’s Homeschool Kids Krav Maga class was LOUD—and our students absolutely rocked it! 💪

Kids are constantly told to settle down, use their inside voices and be quiet. But we teach them that there are moments when being loud is exactly what they need to do.

When something feels wrong:

👀 Be aware
🗣️ Use your voice
🚨 Cause a scene
📢 Draw attention
🏃 Get to safety

Awareness is their first line of defense. Their voice is their second—and it’s powerful.

Come check out our Homeschool Kids Krav Maga class and let us help your child find their voice, build confidence and learn how to use both when it matters most. ❤️🖤

Real skills. Real confidence. Real voices.

❤️ Yesterday was a pretty amazing day at Striker’s Edge!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out for our Back to School Family & Friends Potluck and to everyone who brought all the amazing food! 🥰🍽️

One of our favorite things about Striker’s Edge is getting our families involved and having time together off the mats. We spent the afternoon eating, talking, laughing, and just enjoying each other’s company.

Apparently we were enjoying ourselves a little TOO much… because while cleaning up, I realized we didn’t take a single picture. 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

So instead, I’ll share a couple of our students hanging out and enjoying the day. ❤️

Thank you for being part of our Striker’s Edge family and making days like yesterday so special. We’re already looking forward to our next family event! 🥋❤️🖤

Train together. Grow together. Family beyond the mats.

🎯 Think About It Thursday: Saturday Debrief

This week's question was a little different...

📱 What happens when your child's phone ISN'T an option?

Maybe phones aren't allowed during school hours.

Maybe they forgot it.

Maybe the battery died.

Then something unexpected happens...

Their ride doesn't show.

Practice gets canceled.

Plans suddenly change.

Or an unfamiliar adult says:

"Your mom/dad asked me to pick you up."

Would your child know what to do?

Here's the biggest takeaway:

📵 Don't let the phone BE the plan.

Have a plan for when the phone isn't there.

Talk with your kids about the basics:

📞 Know important phone numbers.
At least one trusted adult's number should be memorized, not just saved in a phone.

🏫 Identify safe adults and places.
If plans change, can they return to the school, coach, teacher, office, security, or another predetermined safe location?

📍 Have a designated meeting place.
If a ride is late or plans get confused, establish where they should wait.

🚗 Know who is allowed to pick them up.
An adult knowing their name or saying, "Your mom sent me," isn't verification.

🔐 Consider a family code word.
If someone unexpectedly needs to pick them up, your child can ask for the word. No correct word? Don't go. And if the code is ever used, change it afterward.

🗣️ Give them permission to say NO.
Kids are often taught to respect adults. Make sure they also know they can refuse, create distance, return inside, and ask for help when something doesn't feel right.

And parents...

Don't assume they know the plan.

Ask them.

Give them a few unexpected situations and let THEM tell YOU what they would do.

You may discover a gap neither of you realized existed.

❤️ This Week's Challenge:

Take five minutes this weekend and create your family's No-Phone Backup Plan.

Because eventually...

The battery will die.

Plans will change.

Someone will be late.

Technology will fail.

Your child's safety plan shouldn't fail with it.

📚 LESSON LEARNED:

Don't let the phone BE the plan. Have a plan for when the phone isn't there.

🧠 Awareness gives you options. Options give you time. Time can save your life.
