Not the start we wanted, but plenty to build on.
Game 1: Doylestown 22 - Breakers 12
In our first 7s match of the season, we were rushing things instead of slowing the game down, finding space, and taking advantage of the opportunities in front of us.
Game 2: Breakers vs Roses
The Breakers came out angry and firing on all cylinders. We punched in two tries and took a 14-12 lead into halftime. Roses managed to sneak in a late try, and we dropped to 0-2 on the day.
Game 3: Breakers vs Montclair
With the same mission in mind, the boys regrouped. Montclair struck first, but after that the Breakers responded with three straight tries. Montclair had an opportunity late to steal the game, but a hard-nosed defensive stand forced a knock-on and secured our first win of the season.
Bowl Match: Breakers 26 - Lehigh Social Side 0
The slow start put us into bowl play, but the team finished strong with a dominant shutout victory to end the day 2-2.
There were so many positives to take away from today, and we have plenty to build on heading into next week’s tournament.
Three cheers to every Breaker who suited up today, and to those who came out to support. Special thanks to Coach Q for leading the way, and to Kyle and Jamel for helping keep the group focused, positive, and ready to battle all day long.
Next up is the Binghamton Roadkill 7s Tournament, and the plan is to head down with two sides. That means we need all hands on deck. If you’ve been thinking about coming out, now is the time. The club is building something, and we need everyone buying in and doing their part.
The season is just getting started. 🏉🔥
3 Cheers for the Breakers!

Official Recognition for the Wilkes-Barre "Breakers" Rugby Football Club 🏉
On this date in 2023, Mayor George C. Brown issued a formal proclamation recognizing the Wilkes-Barre "Breakers" for their dedication to the sport of rugby and the heritage of the Wyoming Valley.
The declaration highlights the club's identity:
- The name "Breakers" was chosen because the Wyoming Valley was once famous for mining anthracite coal. ⛏️
- The team colors are black, symbolizing the coal from the mines, and red representing the struggle and sacrifice of the miners who worked in the mines. ⚫🔴
- Versions of our logo have shown the skull of a miner with his hardhat on, and the crossed pickaxe and sledgehammer which symbolize the tools of his trade. 💀
- Like the miners before them, the club has upheld a strong tradition through hard work and dedication. 💪
- The social aspect of rugby is recognized as being just as important as what happens on the rugby pitch. 🍻
- The traditions upheld off the rugby pitch are the same traditions practiced world-wide. 🌎
On behalf of all citizens of Wilkes-Barre, the Mayor extended sincere best wishes to the Wilkes-Barre "Breakers" Rugby Club. 🏆

The Breakers recently held their annual Red & Black match. Top finishers Jayden Pahler and Jake Cole took the lead, selecting from a pool of current and retired Breakers for what would be a physical and competitive intrasquad scrimmage. Jayden’s Red Team edged out Jake’s Black 38-35, with teams and spectators enjoying a beautiful day of rugby followed by an excellent social hosted by the Polish American Veterans.
The Wilkes-Barre Breakers Hall of Fame added three names to their pantheon, with the first being Joe Dettmore. Joe joined in the Breakers’ early years, serving as a lock on the pitch and Club President off it. As a career in broadcasting led him away from Wilkes-Barre, Joe’s support for the Breakers didn’t waiver. A fixture on the sidelines of both home and away matches, Joe is also a generous donor to the club’s activities. With soft spoken intelligence and a reverence for rugby culture, Joe achieved legend status among active Breakers for his musical talents and lyrical genius as one of Wilkes-Barre’s top songbirds. Joe proves that rugby is a hooligan’s game played by gentlemen, putting the “class” in Hall of Fame Class of 2026.
The next inductee was a two-for-one special, celebrating a Breakers’ power couple on par with Ty and Ian. Kevin Wellard joined Wilkes-Barre after his Navy hitch ended, and the former wrestler developed a reputation as a solid tackler and an ironman. Whether traveling for 15s or summer 7s, Kevin rarely went without his then-girlfriend and super fan DeAnn. Kevin would serve as Club President, and when life made fulfilling his role difficult, DeAnn took over; a woman who had never played serving as the highest official on a D3 men’s rugby team. The couple stepped away for a few years to raise their boys, but in the ultimate act of service to the Breakers, they sacrificed their first born son to the team. Now in his 12th year, KC’s career is the direct result of Kevin’s coaching and DeAnn’s encouragement. That same support extends to the rest of the Breakers, whether it be through Kevin’s sideline lessons, DeAnn’s relentless cheering and “team mom” energy, or the fundraising they’ve done on behalf of the team.

Spring is in the air, and the pitch is getting some much-needed TLC! 🌱
A huge shoutout to a couple of our Old Boys who spent time aerating and seeding the field. The best part? The areas we seeded last Fall are already starting to turn green!
This continuous improvement is only possible thanks to the incredible support from Bourbon City. They are a constant contributor to The Breakers and we can’t thank them enough.
Next time you’re hungry, do yourself a favor and head over to see them. (Trust us: the smoked wings and creative sauces are a total game-changer! 🍗🔥)
