𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗱𝗼𝗺: 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗛𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗿

It’s time celebrate the harvest and begin planning for 2027.

Happy Autumnal Equinox!

This year, I am getting ready to start my strategic planning for 2027 by sorting through all the drawers and cupboards where I have stashed the all my big and small ideas for growing my business with new programs, technology, speaking engagements, podcasts, and another book that I set aside throughout the year.

In the process, I found a huge box of hats. I found hats that I forgot I ever wore that were stuffed into long forgotten dark corners and hidden deep in closets.

As a life-long entrepreneur, I’ve worn a lot of hats. Some were custom made and have become treasured companions, some were borrowed and need to be returned, and far too many never really fit and need to be passed on to people who would enjoy them.
If you have been in business for more than a few years, I bet you have accumulated a sizable box of hats too.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗛𝗮𝘁𝘀
There is a lot of buzz these days about how most entrepreneurs are living with ADD or ADHD. The research suggests that ADHD and significant ADHD traits may be considerably more common among entrepreneurs than in the general population.
Whether or not they get an official diagnosis, most business owners can identify with the common descriptors of ADHD like feeling highly distracted, feeling challenged with prioritization, and procrastination.

Many entrepreneurs also tend to lean in to the strengths associate with ADHD, like having surges of high energy and a willingness to take risks, being spontaneous, creative, curious, and adaptable, being able to generate ideas quickly, and possessing the ability to become intensely absorbed in something compelling (aka hyperfocus).
There is something inherently baked into entrepreneurship that lends itself to wearing lots of hat and feeling like there is never enough time to implement all the bit ideas.

A colleague said something on a podcast that's stayed with me.

She looked at me and said:

'𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗳𝗳.'

And I thought — yes. After 30 years, I do.

We underestimate what we know. We're too close to it. It feels obvious to us, so we assume it's obvious to everyone.

It's not.

The patterns you've seen. The clients you've guided. The hard lessons you've learned at your own expense — that's not common knowledge. That's earned wisdom.

And your best-fit clients are out there right now, looking for someone who knows what you know.

Own it.

I used to think burnout was just... the cost of building something. A tax you pay for ambition.

At a recent networking event, I found myself in the middle of a friendly debate about whether entrepreneurs are born or created.

Justine believes they’re born. She started selling candy to her schoolmates when she was just 5 years old. Today she owns three franchise retail stores. Marion believes they’re created. She became an entrepreneur only after she was laid off three times and had difficulty finding another position. Today she is a human resources consultant.

I believe that anyone can be an entrepreneur, and that our environment can either stimulate or squash our entrepreneurial tendencies.

I grew up in a house full of creativity. My mother was a puppet maker and nurtured an environment where imagination ran wild. With nothing more than a box of puppets, a simple theater attached to a card table, and my imagination, I created endless stories and skits with my friends and siblings.

I lived in a universe where dogs, cats, and rats could talk and be equal to kings, queens, and frogs. If a story dead ended, I could introduce a horse or bear. If I lost the storyline, I could make up a new one. And if I needed a new character, I could make one from a lunch bag.
The only limitation was my imagination.

This wasn’t Mister Rogers' Neighborhood of Make-Believe, with recurring characters and familiar story lines; this was the uniquely quirky universe of a little girl with big ideas and boundless enthusiasm for storytelling.

Because of this fertile ground, I grew up believing I could write my own story.

I drew on the abilities I had developed as a child: seeing possibilities, solving problems, creating something from nothing, taking initiative, influencing others, and believing there was another way when I launched my entrepreneurial journey. I started and failed at several businesses before I found my true home. When those storylines didn’t pan out, I wasn’t afraid to turn the page and write a new chapter. As my imagination matured, I developed new services and programs from whole cloth.
