I do not have many old photos of me as a young black belt. This is one, however. I was fighting full contact in Europe 35 years ago. I remember those African Francophones giving me hell. I was 200 pound soaking wet. They were very challenging fighters. Strong, fast, and proficient.
Prof. David B. James and I had a long conversation about the old "famed" Atlantic Ave (Brooklyn) Dojo this morning. Many of the black belts who were taught by then Chief Instructor Luis "aka Lou" Ferrer at the Clayton Place (Brooklyn) Dojo like Senseis Mike, Sae, John, and Mahaliah all followed us to Atlantic Ave in '88 when it opened. It was the "finishing school" (as Prof. Vee used to it) in NYC in the late '80s for everyone and anyone learning or teaching the grappling arts because like Dave said this morning it was where the "information" and the "old man" was. It was not usual to see "Doc" and Lou working technique on the floor. Or Grandmaster Ronald Duncan demonstrating weapons, or Prof. Chris Columbo, or Prof. Vee demonstrating a finger lock on a hapless uke or many others that had the respect of their peers in Vee Jitsu. In the stands would be a veritable who's who in the NYC martial arts community. Just to think about those times, the hours upon hours of training on the mats, which has us looking like chiseled models who could do what we were trained to do in a street self-defense situation is still heady. It was the Harvard or Howard of martial arts instruction. And anyone who was not there had better ask someone who was because I was ...

There are certain techniques universal to Vee Jitsu practitioners. The Dimensions are one. The Phases are another. The famed Taes the final piece of the puzzle. If a person claims to teach Vee Jitsu, ask her or him to demonstrate, and publicly post the techniques. 'nuff said...
