SMM Varsity Football – Student Team Manager Opportunity!

Do you know any boys or girls who would like to be part of the varsity football team but aren’t necessarily interested in playing? We’re looking for student team managers to support both practices and game days.

Managers will help with:

• practice setup and ex*****on
• equipment organization
• sideline and game‑day support

Ideal candidates are 6th, 7th, or 8th graders who enjoy being part of a team environment and want a behind‑the‑scenes role with football. It’s a great introduction to high school team management, which can be an incredibly rewarding experience and often opens doors to leadership roles later on.

Last Thursday evening, the Saint Mary Magdalen 8th grade and their families gathered for a memorable sports banquet celebrating the accomplishments of our graduating student-athletes.

🐾 We were honored to welcome back Joe McDonough from the B+ Foundation, who shared the story of his son Andrew and the foundation’s incredible mission to support pediatric cancer patients and their families. His message was a powerful reminder of resilience, compassion, and the impact of community.

🐾 The evening also recognized our Bulldog Award recipients across all sports, honoring those student-athletes who best represent SMM through their dedication, sportsmanship, and commitment to CYM athletics.

🐾 A special highlight was celebrating Marty Barnes and his remarkable 40 years as JV football coach. His dedication has shaped generations of athletes, and his legacy will continue to inspire for years to come.

Guests enjoyed a delicious dinner and the opportunity to come together one last time as a sports community to celebrate our graduates, reflect on the season, and send them off with pride.

Congratulations to all of our student-athletes—we are so proud of you!

For 40 years, Marty Barnes has been more than a football coach at St. Mary Magdalen – he’s been a mentor, a role model, and a steady presence in the lives of countless young athletes. His dedication to the JV football program has shaped generations, instilling discipline, teamwork, grit, and character both on and off the field.

This year, Marty’s incredible legacy was celebrated in a special way. He was honored with the CYM St. John Bosco Award for outstanding service to young people and recognized at the 8th‑grade sports banquet for his remarkable 40‑year milestone on the sidelines. In addition, the Athletic Association established The Marty Barnes Award, presented each year to a graduating 8th‑grade student who exemplifies Marty’s relentless work ethic, grit, teamwork, creativity, and charisma, leading by example with passion, imagination, and a genuine love for the game.

Adding to the significance of the night, Kevin Reilly – SMM graduate, Sallies graduate, Villanova graduate, and former Philadelphia Eagle – returned to speak in Marty’s honor, paying tribute to the coach who helped shape his own journey in football and in life. Congratulations, Coach Barnes, and thank you for four decades of leadership, impact, and unwavering commitment to the young people of St. Mary Magdalen.
