The three Associations had been playing Inter-City Team Matches since 1902 and developed an interest

Nataliya Guseva from the University of Miami held off a strong challenge from Kendall Turner to win the Women’s Eastern Amateur Championship. She shot three under par to take home the trophy.

EMILY HAWKINS CAPTURES WOMEN’S EASTERN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP!
The Women’s Eastern Golf Championship – which has been played for over 100 years and is one of the oldest and most prestigious women's amateur championships in the United States – finished today at Tanglewood Park.
The women played a three-day, 54-hole stroke play championship on the Championship Course, which proved to be very challenging and a great test of skill.
Emily Hawkins (Campbell University), who had the 36-hole lead – kept the lead through today, shooting three under par (69) and beating out a very strong field with a total score of 210.
Payton Schanen (Mercer University) made a very strong run at the leader, finishing with the low round of the day (68) and taking second place (216 total).
Third place went to Sarah-Eve Rheaume (Furman University), who finished one under par with a 71 (216 total)).
WEGA also awarded prizes to the following:
4th place: Lauren Greenlief (219)
5th place: Ahra Ko (210) (Northern Illinois University)
6th place: Linda Want (220) (St. John’s University)
7th place: Ximena Gonzalez Garcia (220) (University of Arkansas)
8th place: Carol Pyon (222) (Mercer University)
Next year’s Championship will be held at the Cobblestone Golf Club in Columbia, SC.

The Women’s Eastern Golf Championship – which has been played for over 100 years and is one of the oldest and most prestigious women's amateur championships in the United States – kicked off today at Tanglewood Park.
The women are playing a three-day, 54-hole stroke play championship on the Championship course.
The course set-up is long and pin placements are challenging, all of which makes for a great test of skill.
The field is extremely strong with some of the top college players on the Eastern Seaboard competing.
Carly Burkhardt aced the 7th hole, notching a hole in one on the par 3 (playing 135 yards)!!
After the first day, Ximena Gonzalez Garcia is leading the field with a 70. She is closely followed by Linda Wantgand Sarah-Eve Rheaume, who both shot 71, and four players at 74 (Ahra Ko, Ankita Kedlaya, Emily Hawkins, and Payton Schanen)
Tee times start at 8am tomorrow and Thursday. Admission is free and spectators are welcome.

REONA HIRAI CAPTURES WOMEN’S EASTERN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP!
The Women’s Eastern Golf Championship – which has been played for over 100 years and is one of the oldest and most prestigious women's amateur championships in the United States – finished today at Palmetto Hall Plantation.
The women played a three-day, 54-hole stroke play championship on the Robert Cupp course, which proved to be very challenging and a great test of skill.
Reona Hirai (Furman University), who had the 36-hole lead – kept the lead through today, shooting one under par (71) and beating out a very strong field with a total score of 213.
Magdalena Simmermacher (Old Dominion University) made a very strong run at the leader, nailing 7 birdies in her round and finishing with a 71. She finished fourth overall.
Second place went to Courtney McKin, who played in the leader group today and also shot 71 (217 total) while Maggie Ashmore (Augusta University) captured third place with a 71 as well (220 total).
WEGA also awarded prizes to the following:
5th place: Sophie DiPetrillo (224) (University of Richmond)
6th place: Amanda Hollandsworth (226) (Virginia Tech University)
7th place: Elisa Yang (228) (University of Georgia)
8th place: Alexis Kershaw (228) (UNC – Greensboro)
Next year’s Championship will be held at the Tanglewood Championship Course near Winston-Salem.
WEGA will be back on the Island with its Senior Amateur Championship, which will be held on the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto Hall Plantation from October 22 through October 24.

WOMEN’S EASTERN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP – PLAYER NAILS A HOLE IN ONE!
After two days, the sole leader is Reona Hirai (142 total), a recent Furman University graduate, who exploded into the lead today with a 67. She will be joined in the leader group by Courtney McKin (146 total) and Maggie Ashmore (148 total) (Augusta University). Directly behind them are three strong golfers tied at 149: Sarah Harrison, Magdalena Simmermacher (Old Dominion University), and Amanda Hollandsworth (Virginia Tech University).
The most exciting moment of the day, however, came at the par 3 8th hole, where Ankita Kedlaya made a hole in one on the 119-yard hole with an 8-iron.

After the first day, the co-leaders are Maggie Ashmore (Augusta University), Elisa Yang (University of Georgia) and Amanda Hollandsworth (Virginia Tech University), who both shot even par. Closely following them at 73 are Magdalena Summermacher (Old Dominion University) and Alexis Kershaw (UNC Greensboro) while another Kayla Thompson (UNC Wilmington) nailed a 74.
Tee times start at 7:30am tomorrow, and at 8am on Thursday. Admission is free and spectators are welcome.
The 2018 WEGA Championship opens this week at Palmetto Hall Plantation Country Club. Our field is very strong and the course looks to be a challenge. Our fingers are crossed that Mother Nature will be busy elsewhere!
