Master of the Month:
Kanga "Tode" Sakugawa (1733–1815)
If you trace the roots of modern Karate back to its Okinawan source, you will inevitably run straight into Master Kanga Sakugawa. Known famously as "Tode" (Chinese Hand) Sakugawa, he was a monumental bridge between ancient Chinese combat arts and indigenous Okinawan Te. He traveled to China multiple times to study Ch'uan Fa (Kung Fu), famously training under Kusanku (the inspiration behind the foundational Kanku-dai kata). Sakugawa is credited with introducing the concept of the Dojo Kun—the traditional rules of conduct and character development that guide karatekas worldwide to this day. His most famous student was none other than Bushi Matsumura, who went on to train the masters who shaped Shorin-ryu, Shotokan, Sh*to-ryu, and more.
Every time you bow onto the mat or practice a kata you are participating in a lineage he helped build.
