Virginia USA Wrestling is the Virginia state chapter of USA Wrestling Virginia Wrestling Association, Inc. In 1983, the U.S.
(VAWA) is the state chapter of USA Wrestling in the commonwealth of Virginia. In 2014 VAWA’s membership consisted of over 6,900 athletes, coaches and officials ranging from wrestlers as young as five years old to coaches and officials in their seventies. VA USA Wrestling would like to address the community regarding the suspension of Mr. Atwell.
On April 20, upon receiving the first report of misconduct through SafeSport, VA USA Wrestling took immediate action. Mr. Atwell’s USA Wrestling membership card was suspended, removed, and USA Wrestling was notified that he was no longer affiliated with VA USA Wrestling and was to have no privileges or participation under our organization. Following our actions, USA Wrestling and SafeSport conducted their own investigation. As of Friday, May 8, Mr. Atwell has been placed on the USA Wrestling national suspension list.
Mr. Atwell is no longer affiliated with VA USA Wrestling and will not be permitted to participate in any VA USA Wrestling sanctioned events, activities, or chartered clubs ever again. He will not be allowed to coach, participate, or have any involvement with VA USA Wrestling or USA Wrestling moving forward.
This situation is extremely serious, and our hearts are with the families and individuals impacted. We recognize the weight of these matters and the importance of protecting athletes, families, and the integrity of our sport.
VA USA Wrestling fully cooperated with every part of the investigation and followed all required reporting procedures immediately upon learning of the allegations. From the moment this was reported to us, we acted swiftly and appropriately in accordance with SafeSport and USA Wrestling policies.
Out of respect for the wishes of the families involved, who asked for privacy during this process and did not want unnecessary public attention placed upon them, we refrained from making a public statement.
While this has been a difficult situation for everyone involved, we are thankful that action was taken, that the matter was addressed appropriately, and that Mr. Atwell will face the consequences of his actions.
VA USA Wrestling remains fully committed to providing a safe environment for every athlete, coach, and family in our community.
