🥋🍕 A Weekend of Martial Arts, Friends & Pizza!
We had a little extra fun at the studio this weekend!
Friday evening, Arij brought some of her friends to the dojo for a Neon Ninja Party —complete with martial arts, games, pizza, black lights, and plenty of glow-in-the-dark fun. 🌟🥷
Then on Saturday afternoon, Parker brought a group of his friends for another afternoon of martial arts, games, and pizza!
These parties were simply an opportunity for a couple of our students to bring their friends to the studio, have some fun, and share a little of what they enjoy about martial arts. We had a great time with both groups!
And if these pictures have you thinking, “That would make a pretty cool birthday party…” — good news! 🎂
We host birthday parties, too! Kids can celebrate their big day with friends, martial arts activities, games, and more—including our Neon Ninja glow-in-the-dark party theme!
📩 Drop us a message for birthday party information!

🥋 Take the First Step
“Am I too out of shape to start martial arts?”
It's a question a lot of adults wonder about—and sometimes it's the very thing that keeps them from ever walking through the door.
You might think you need to lose weight first. Get stronger. Become more flexible. Build up your endurance.
But here's the thing: you don't get ready for martial arts and then start martial arts. You start where you are.
Nobody expects a beginner to walk into their first class already able to keep up with someone who's been training for years. You learn the techniques, work at your own pace, and gradually challenge yourself as your abilities improve.
You don't need to be able to kick high. You don't need to be able to do 50 push-ups. And you certainly don't need to “get in shape” before you're allowed to begin.
Martial arts isn't just for people who are already athletic.
It's for people willing to start.
So if you've been telling yourself, “I'll try martial arts once I get in better shape,” maybe it's time to reverse that thinking.
🥋 Start first. The rest comes with practice.

🥋 Back on the Mat!
After the long Labor Day weekend, it was great to see everyone back at the studio tonight!
We got back to work with plenty of training, plenty of energy, and—as you can see—plenty of smiles. 😄
One of the things we love about martial arts is that there's always something more to learn. A few days away can be nice, but there's nothing quite like getting back on the mat with your instructors, friends, and training partners.
Thanks to everyone who came out and made our first classes back such a fun night!
Good to be back. Now let's have a great September! 🥋

Just a quick reminder that we are closed Saturday 9/5 - Monday 9/7 in observance of Labor Day.
Have a fun and safe holiday weekend. We will see you back on the mats starting Tuesday, 9/8

🥋 25 Years
September 4th marks a pretty special anniversary for me.
Twenty-five years ago, on September 4, 2001, I became a Head Instructor and began running my own martial arts school locations. In many ways, that's the day martial arts went from being something I did to becoming my profession.
I still remember that day.
I left early from a family vacation with my parents. My dad drove me to the airport and I flew back to Atlanta before the sun had risen. I went to class at Georgia State and then drove straight to teach my first class as a Head Instructor.
I had wanted that opportunity for a long time.
When I was about 9 years old, I already knew that I wanted to become a Karate instructor when I grew up. September 4, 2001 was the first big step toward actually making that childhood dream my life.
Four years later, in September 2005, I took another big step and opened a martial arts school here in Barrow County.
Over the past 25 years, I've taught thousands upon thousands of classes. Five days a week, usually three or four classes a night, year after year.
But when I think about those 25 years, I don't really think about the number of classes I've taught—or even the number of belts I've awarded.
I think about the people.
I've watched children grow up in front of me. I've seen students graduate, get married, build careers, and start families of their own. I've attended students' weddings. I've had students that grew up on the mat and former students bring their own children to my classes. And over enough years, I've also experienced the harder side of long relationships—saying goodbye and attending funerals.
The belts are important. The techniques are important. But after 25 years, I've come to realize that they're only the surface of what it means to spend your life teaching martial arts.
I've grown and changed along the way, too. I've made mistakes. I've faced plenty of challenges. I've changed the way I teach. I've continued training and learning myself. And hopefully, I've become a better instructor along the way.
The locations have changed. The curriculum has evolved. Eventually, the journey led to Master Pattillo Martial Arts and the school we have today.
But after 25 years, the part I enjoy most is still pretty simple:
Doing martial arts. Helping people learn. Watching students succeed.
There have certainly been challenges along the way, but I can't imagine doing anything else.
To everyone who has ever stepped onto the mat and trusted me to be part of your martial arts journey—thank you.
Twenty-five years later, I'm incredibly fortunate that the thing I dreamed about doing when I was a kid is still what I get to do every day.
And I'm not finished learning yet. 🥋

🥋😊 Learning & Smiling
We take martial arts seriously—but that doesn't mean we have to be serious all the time!
At Master Pattillo Martial Arts, our goal is to create an environment where students can work hard, challenge themselves, learn practical self-protection skills, and develop character while still enjoying the process.
Sometimes that means concentrating on a difficult technique. Sometimes it means working together with a training partner. And sometimes it means catching the camera in the middle of class with a big smile! 😄
We want our students to look forward to coming to class, because when kids enjoy learning, they're more likely to keep showing up, keep practicing, and keep growing.
Work hard. Learn something. Have fun. Keep smiling. 🥋

🥋🌟 New Belts Are Ready!
There's something exciting about seeing a table with a group of new belts waiting for their new owners!
Over the past several weeks, our students have been showing up, practicing their techniques, working through challenges, and completing the requirements for their next rank.
Now it's time to celebrate their progress!
A new belt isn't just a different color around your waist. It represents classes attended, skills learned, challenges overcome, and effort repeated over and over again.
We're proud of all of our students who have earned their promotions—and we're excited to present these new belts in class!
Congratulations! 👏🥋
And then? We get right back to learning. 😊

🌟 September Character Theme: Positive Attitude
A new month means a new character theme!
Throughout September, we'll be talking with our students about Positive Attitude—and what that looks like both inside and outside the martial arts school.
Having a positive attitude doesn't mean pretending that everything is easy or that we're always happy. Challenges happen. We make mistakes. Sometimes things simply don't go the way we hoped.
A positive attitude is about what we choose to do next.
🥋 Can we try again when something is difficult?
🥋 Can we learn from a mistake instead of getting discouraged?
🥋 Can we encourage a teammate who's struggling?
🥋 Can we look for what we can do instead of focusing only on what we can't?
Those are skills we can practice, just like punches, kicks, and self-defense techniques.
Our new Positive Attitude Mission Sheets are coming out this week, giving students another opportunity to practice these lessons at home, at school, and in their community.
Here's to a great September—and plenty of reasons to smile! 😃🥋

🎬🥋 That’s a Wrap on August!
What a month!
August brought everyone back to school and back to the dojo, and we've packed a lot into the last few weeks.
We trained hard, worked toward new belts, practiced Self-Control as our Character Theme of the Month, watched students step into leadership roles, welcomed friends to the dojo for our Back to School Pizza Party & Buddy Bash, and—most importantly—had a lot of fun along the way!
We've seen students overcome challenges, gain confidence, help their teammates, step outside their comfort zones, and continue becoming better martial artists and better leaders.
Thank you to all of our students, families, staff, and Leadership Team members who helped make August such a great month.
September is almost here, and we're ready for what's next! 🥋
Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep smiling.

🌟 Character Theme: Self-Control
What if some of our biggest challenges can eventually become some of our greatest strengths?
This week, we've been talking with our students about how self-control doesn't look exactly the same for everyone.
Some people have a hard time sitting still. Others struggle with frustration, staying organized, focusing on one thing at a time, or speaking up when they're nervous. Those challenges are real—but learning how to work with them can teach us skills that become incredibly valuable later in life.
A child who learns strategies for managing lots of energy may grow into an adult who can juggle many responsibilities. Someone whose mind seems to go in a dozen directions may learn to see connections and possibilities that other people miss. A student who has to work especially hard to manage frustration gets lots of practice learning perseverance.
Sometimes the things we struggle with can even become a kind of "super-power"—not because the challenge disappears, but because we learn how to understand it, manage it, and use the strengths that come with seeing the world a little differently.
🥋 Self-control isn't about becoming someone else. It's about learning how to bring out the best in who we already are.
