Unfortunately, child abuse and neglect are an all-too common occurrence. Last year, one in seven children experienced child abuse and neglect. That’s approximately 678,000 children each year. In Forsyth County alone, last year there were 3,117 reports of abuse or neglect.
 
Multiple research studies have shown that toxic stressors in a child’s environment (the kind of stress caused by long-term, persistent factors such as abuse or neglect) affect the architecture of the developing brain. Children who experience abuse and neglect are 24% less likely to graduate from high school, 60% more likely to live in poverty and nine times more likely to be involved in criminal activity. Only about 44% of child abuse victims receive recovery services after being abused or neglected.
 
For 43 years, The Parenting PATH (formerly Exchange/SCAN) has offered high-quality programs supporting families experiencing toxic stress. If all children and families had access to these programs, we would lay solid foundations and prevent more serious problems from developing later — and that would be beneficial for our entire community. Our children are our most valuable resource. Every child deserves to grow up knowing safety and love.
