It’s hard to believe that Jo started training with us almost 3 years ago now. On top of her being hands down one of the most dedicated, resilient, and all around hardcore fighters to ever do it. She’s also an amazing teacher that puts her whole heart into the study, practice, and instruction of the different systems we offer.

What separates Leviathan?

One thing you’ll notice from the moment you enter our doors is that we love fighting. And I don’t mean that in a Brad Pitt, bloody lipped, fight club kind of way. (Or maybe I do, but we don’t talk about it.)

We have a class focus. Typically a lesson spanning around 30 minutes with a short drill to establish fundamentals. But if during that lesson you pause and read the room, you’d be able to tell from beginner student to veteran fighter, everyone is thinking the exact same thing. “How quickly can we pressure test this?”

There’s an old saying about pressure making diamonds. I think the same thing can be said about application refining technique. The lesson gives you an idea. The rest you gain by in the moment correction while sparring more experienced class mates and your instructors.

That is and always has been the heart of Leviathan.

We spar. We spar often, we spar hard, and we spar with intention.

And we all wear the badge of “fight pit” proudly.

The Duel.

For honor, for glory, or maybe just for the hell of it.

During class with no more than the proverbial throwing of a gauntlet (or more literal hurling of a few colorful words) a duel can be set and a space on the floor can be cleared.

Much like throughout history weapons are often mixed and you fight to pre negotiated terms. Typically to the first disabling or mortal hit.

The goal is not to win, it’s to live. These types of fights train a distinct level of respect towards the weapons we use and the opponents we face. A level of gravity not always present in sparring and the “why” to the techniques from the manuals we practice.

One things for sure. At Leviathan we’re keeping dueling culture alive and you can consider this your formal challenge.

So prepare your second and make peace with your god. Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings we fight to the death!
