The overhead squat is one of those movements that tells you a lot.

It asks for balance, coordination, flexibility, core control, shoulder stability, and solid squat mechanics all at once. That’s exactly why we use it as both a training tool and a way to expose where movement starts to break down.

A better overhead squat can help improve so much more than just the overhead squat itself. The positions and control you build here carry over into snatches, jerks, front squats, back squats, and even your ability to move well under load in general.

If your overhead squat feels limited, it can be a clue. Maybe it’s ankle mobility. Maybe it’s shoulder position. Maybe it’s core control or squat mechanics. Improving those pieces can help clean up a lot of other lifts too.

It’s not just about getting weight overhead. It’s about owning strong, stable positions from the ground up.

Congratulations to everyone who hit 15+ classes in August! We love seeing familiar names on this list each month and it’s great to see some new ones too!

One lift. A whole lot of carryover. 💪

At its core, a deadlift is simply picking something up from the ground safely and efficiently. This is something we do in everyday life all the time.

In CrossFit, we train the deadlift because it builds total-body strength and teaches us how to move external load while maintaining strong, sound positions.

And that strength doesn’t stay isolated to the deadlift.

A stronger, more technically sound deadlift can show up in:
• Cleans and snatches off the floor
• Kettlebell swings
• Dumbbell movements
• Heavy carries
• Picking up odd objects
• And plenty of everyday tasks outside the gym (like picking up your grandkids)

That’s one of the things we love about functional movement: getting better at one foundational pattern can improve so many other things we do.

So when we’re working on deadlifts, the goal isn’t just to see how much weight we can pull (although we love watching you all put up some serious weight!!) We’re also practicing how to create tension, maintain position, move load efficiently, and build strength that transfers.

Heavy is fun. Strong, repeatable movement is even better. 🔥

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movement performed at high intensity — but constantly varied does not mean random.

Good programming has purpose.

We use different movements, loads, time domains, and combinations to keep training challenging, engaging, and fun, while still building toward progress over time. There’s an order to what we do, even when no two days look exactly the same.

That variety helps us develop a broad base of fitness without getting stuck doing the same thing over and over. And because the workouts are scalable, the same class can meet athletes at very different ages, abilities, and experience levels.

The goal is variety with intention: enough change to keep you adapting, enough structure to keep you improving, and enough flexibility to make it work for everyone in the room.

That’s what makes CrossFit both effective and fun. 💪

Heavy front squats are fun. But a bigger number on the bar only matters if the mechanics come with it. 💪

As we move through this front squat cycle, these are the positions and movement standards we want you to work towards every rep:

• Maintain the front-rack position — keep the bar supported on the shoulders with the elbows high. Don’t let the bar roll forward as you squat.

• Maintain the lumbar curve — we want to see your spine keep the same shape throughout the movement. No collapsing or “butt wink” at the bottom.

• Keep the knees tracking with the toes — knees should follow the same direction as your feet with a little pressure “out”

• Keep the heels down — stay connected to the floor and balanced through the whole foot.

• Reach full depth — the hip crease finishes below the top of the knee.

• Finish with full hip and knee extension — stand all the way up at the top of every rep.

• Keep the bar over the middle of the foot — from the side, the bar should stay stacked over your base of support instead of drifting forward.

The goal over the next few weeks isn’t just to add weight. It’s to make those positions more consistent as the load increases.

CrossFit’s progression is mechanics → consistency → intensity for a reason. Better mechanics give us a stronger foundation, and consistent mechanics allow us to safely and effectively increase intensity.

So yes, chase the heavy lift—but chase a better squat with it.

Move well. Do it consistently. Then earn the load. 🔥

New week, new strength cycle. 💪

If you’ve been wanting to get more consistent with tracking your progress, this is the perfect time to start.

Make sure you’re logging your lifts in Wodify so you can look back over the next few weeks and actually see the progress you’re making—not just guess at it.☺️

Not sure how to log your numbers? Ask a coach and we’ll show you.

Happy Monday, CFWP! 🔥
