Retirement gives you freedom. It also gives you a surprising number of decisions. Here’s why a little structure can actually make retirement feel more freeing. # retirement

Why do some couples have more fun together after retirement? It may be less about having more time and more about having more chances to try something new together.

New experiences can bring fresh conversation, shared memories, and a little more playfulness into a long-term relationship.

You've been planning your retirement finances.
But have you been planning for your LIFE in retirement?

We spend years thinking about savings, investments, and when we can afford to stop working. We spend far less time thinking about what happens after.

How will you spend your days? What will give you purpose? How might your relationships change? What will you miss about working?

These aren't small questions. And they deserve more than an afterthought.

On October 22, at 4 p.m. Eastern, I'm hosting a free Shaping Your Retirement webinar to explore the non-financial side of retirement and how to begin planning for a fulfilling next chapter.

If retirement is on the horizon or you're already there and wondering what's next, I'd love for you to join me.

Leaders, before you solve it, ask:

“What do you think we should do?”

or say:
"I'd like to hear your perspective first"

Every executive arrives at retirement with a to-do list. Almost none arrive with a stop-doing list.

The 24/7 availability reflex. The need to be the decision-maker in every room. The quiet discomfort with an unstructured Tuesday. These habits don't retire automatically just because you do.

Inside our Executive Retirement Strategy Intensive, the Strategic Stop-Doing List is the first thing we work on, before we touch a single vision exercise. Vision built on top of unexamined habits just rebuilds the old job with fewer resources.

You built a career on knowing what to do next. The next chapter starts with knowing what to leave behind.

Clear the page first. Then we build.

Month three. Someone tilts their head and asks, "So, are you loving retirement yet?"

You smile. You say something gracious. Inside, you wonder why you don't have a better answer.

Here is what nobody tells retiring executives. The social clock starts ticking the moment you walk out. By month three, friends expect the hobbies. Family expects the schedule. You expect yourself to be thriving on cue.

That pressure is not a personal failing. It is a culture that confused busyness with worth, then handed you a deadline to prove you still have it.

Reflection takes longer than reaction. Identity does not rebuild on a quarterly timeline. A life designed in three months tends to look suspiciously like the one you just left, only quieter.

Going slowly is not falling behind. It is the work.

You are not behind. You are on your own timeline.

Good leaders don’t eliminate tension.

They learn how to work through it.
They build the judgment to sit with it, manage competing demands, and guide teams through uncertainty.

Stop It — You Are NOT Their Friend!

If you lead people, you've had this moment: a conversation you kept putting off, feedback you watered down, a decision you sat on because making it meant disappointing someone you genuinely like.

Most of us tell ourselves we're being kind by waiting. Usually we're just protecting ourselves from the discomfort of being the person who says the hard thing.

In my latest Linkedin article, I share the story of a VP who built his whole leadership identity on being the person everyone loved working for, until that same instinct started quietly costing his team the clarity they needed from him. What changed wasn't that he got colder. He just stopped letting his warmth do the job that honesty was supposed to do.

Read the full article at the link below, and let me know: where are you choosing comfort over clarity right now, and calling it kindness?

360 feedback is not the finish line. It is the beginning of a much more important conversation.

AI can help surface patterns and themes, but leadership development still requires context, curiosity, trust, and thoughtful follow-through.

This Forbes Coaches Council article offers several useful perspectives on where coaches can get 360 feedback wrong and what to do differently.
