When you are brand new, your goal isn’t to collect fifty different submission techniques. Your goal is to build a framework of survival and body awareness. 1. The Survival Mindset (The “Rule of 3”)
As a beginner, you will spend most of your time on the bottom getting smashed. That is normal. Instead of panicking and burning all your cardio in the first 30 seconds, focus on these three rules:
Keep your elbows inside: Imagine you are wearing a straightjacket. Never extend your arms straight up or leave your elbows flaring out. Exposed arms get bartered for armbars and Americanas.
Don’t accept the flat back: If you are on the bottom, never lie completely flat on your back like a pancake. Bridge slightly and turn onto your side hip. Being flat makes you heavy and easy to pin; being on your side gives you mobility.
Protect your neck: Keep your chin tucked and your hands up near your collarbones (“invisible shields”) to defend against collars and choke attempts. Stay tuned for more Bjj tips to make your journey more productive & enjoyable.
