ITA Recognizes Women's Tennis For Academics - The College of Wooster The College of Wooster women's tennis team earned an Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team Award for having a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or greater.

Congratulations to Abby Williams on being named the 2026 ITA Sally Ride STEM Award Winner!!! What an honor to receive such a prestigious award and help carry on Sally Ride’s legacy! This is a testament to Abby’s incredible hard work, dedication and perseverance both on the court and in the classroom throughout her four years at The College of Wooster. A huge thanks to all who supported and mentored Abby in her endeavors.

This award is open to all Intercollegiate Tennis Association female tennis players planning to pursue graduate studies in a STEM field and across all NCAA divisions. Abby will attend The University of Pennsylvania this fall in preparation for a career in vaccinology.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (@ita_tennis) has announced that Abigail Williams from The College of Wooster (@wooinsider) in Ohio is the winner of the 2026 ITA Sally Ride STEM Award, now in its fifth year. The $8,000 award was endowed by Sally Ride’s life partner, Tam O’Shaughnessy, to assist a female college tennis player who plans to pursue graduate studies in a STEM field. Williams, who recently graduated from Wooster with a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, plans to pursue her doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania in preparation for a career in vaccinology. As a toddler, Williams was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA), a chronic illness that restricts mobility. However, she defied the odds by becoming a leader of Wooster's tennis team. Ride played tennis at Stanford, where she earned her doctorate in physics before joining NASA and becoming the first American woman in space. Abigail Williams is one of four finalists for the prestigious ITA Sally Ride STEM Award as endowed by Tam O’Shaughnessy.

Now in the award’s fifth year, the ITA Sally Ride STEM Award honors one of the biggest icons in American history, Dr. Sally Ride, who was the first woman to soar into space. Combining two of Dr. Ride’s greatest passions in tennis and science, this award has been awarded to some of the most distinguished student-athletes in college athletics.

Being awarded to a female student-athlete who demonstrates zeal, dedication, and perseverance towards her tennis training and competition, STEM studies, and long-term goals, the ITA Sally Ride STEM Award serves as a symbol of the ability of women to shatter barriers both on and off the court.

“The ITA Sally Ride STEM Award represents the very best of what college athletics can inspire—excellence in competition and commitment” said ITA CEO David Mullins. “This year’s finalists embody Dr. Sally Ride’s legacy through their passion for both tennis and STEM, and we are incredibly proud to celebrate their achievements and support their future endeavors”.

Each year, the recipient of the award receives a grant in the amount of eight thousand dollars ($8,000) to pursue her dreams. The award money given to the student-athlete may be used in any way she wishes [e.g., tuition, books, rent, etc.]

Additionally, the ITA will donate two thousand dollars ($2,000) to the women’s tennis program of the institution from which the award winner graduated.
