This summer will be Renske’s second time working with Thomson Hockey in the USA, bringing her energy, passion, and experience back to the program after missing last year’s tour while travelling around Australia.

Renske currently plays in the D1 team at HCG in the Netherlands and has spent many years developing both as a player and coach within the Dutch hockey system. Her understanding of the game, combined with her enthusiasm for coaching and player development, makes her a fantastic addition to the Thomson Hockey staff.

Alongside her playing career, Renske has several years of experience coaching and training youth teams of different age groups, helping players improve both technically and tactically while creating a positive and energetic learning environment. Her ability to connect with players and communicate clearly on the field allows her to bring confidence and enjoyment to every session.

Renske brings a strong understanding of modern Dutch hockey principles, with a focus on game awareness, decision making, skill development, and creating an enjoyable but challenging training atmosphere. She is passionate about helping young players grow, compete, and better understand the game.

After being unable to join the staff last summer due to travelling throughout Australia, Renske is excited to finally return and share her knowledge and love for hockey with players and coaches across the USA this summer.

She is looking forward to meeting everyone and helping create a fun, educational, and memorable experience on and off the field.

🚨 NEXTGEN COACHES – THE DUTCH WAY 🚨

I’m excited to officially launch NextGen Coaches — a free coaching community designed to help young field hockey coaches under 25 learn, grow, and develop their understanding of the game.

Too many young coaches are left trying to figure things out alone.

This community was created to change that.

The goal is simple:

✅ Help young coaches become more confident
✅ Improve session quality and game understanding
✅ Teach modern Dutch hockey principles
✅ Create a supportive coaching network

Inside the community, coaches will get:
🏑 Weekly training session ideas
🧠 Coaching tips and tactical insights
💻 Monthly online meetings & Q&A sessions
📈 Support with player development and session planning
🤝 Access to a growing network of young coaches

This is not about copying drills from social media.

This is about learning:

• HOW to coach

• HOW to build sessions

• HOW to understand the game

• HOW to develop players properly

Everything is built around:
🇳🇱 Dutch hockey principles
⚡ Modern game understanding
📚 Real coaching education

If you’re a young coach who wants to improve and be part of something bigger, I’d love to have you involved.

📩 To join:
Send me a message with NEXTGEN and I’ll send you the community link.

Let’s help raise the next generation of coaches together.

The Back 4 in Field Hockey 🏑

A strong back 4 doesn’t just defend — it builds the attack.

✔️ Create width in build-up
✔️ Split high and wide to stretch the press
✔️ Control the tempo
✔️ Step in when space opens
✔️ Communicate constantly

If your back line stands flat and static… you’re predictable.
If they rotate, step in, and recognise pressing triggers… you control the game.

Modern hockey isn’t about clearing lines.
It’s about building through them.

Train your defenders to think like midfielders.

Counter-pressing isn’t about chasing — it’s about control.

This document breaks down how we use counter-pressing to dictate where the ball can go, trap opponents in predictable areas, and win possession back in dangerous zones.

From surrounding the ball carrier, to blocking passing lanes and forcing play backwards, these diagrams show the decision-making, timing, and collective movement behind effective counter-pressing — the Dutch way.

Lose the ball → react together → regain control.
