Mark your calendars for the Over Under Biathlon in Surf City, NC on September 19!🚣🏃

We’re calling out all of our paddlers along the coast from as north as Topsail all the way down to Carolina Beach…you need to be here! We have divisions for paddle boards, kayaks/canoes/OC/surf ski/ etc, relay teams, and of course an option for those who want to paddle only without the running involved.

This is an awesome opportunity to get your paddle in the water, get active, get in a run, and do it all at one of the only races in the area that offer something like this.

Looking to run just the 5K portion? Head to the The Wish Maker 5k page, which is the sister race happening at the same time as the Over Under.

Don’t miss out on this awesome opportunity to paddle with us and have fun with the whole family! Register via the link here: https://runsignup.com/Race/NC/SurfCity/OverUnderBiathlonand5k

THE ROUTES - TTL Memories 250

You would think it would be simple, eh? Just go around and across beautiful Lake Waccamaw? Well, here is how “unsimple” it has been:

- The 4-mile Swim across the lake:
Lee Greer started this decades ago, and established a nice route, using the longest distance across the lake, between the dam and Dale’s. It’s four miles, but with lower water, swimmers can walk a good distance from the dam. We never really know until Swim Day which way the wind blows, so it’s always a guessing game, (in predawn darkness,) whether to start at Dale’s or the dam.

- The 15-mile Walk/Run around the lake:
Grant Egley started this around the turn of the century, beginning at the state park welcome center, and that is where we started and finished for the first few years. (My favorite was the year we finished in the beautiful, small field behind the center.) With some 500 participants, it was a tough call to go clockwise, crowding them all onto the state park trails all at once, so we tried it both ways. After a few years, we moved it to Elizabeth Brinkley Park and solved a lot of logistics issues.

- The 15-mile Bike/Hike around the lake:
I enjoyed starting and finishing this at Dale’s and the Boys & Girls Homes lawn, but that got challenging with blocking the street with some 500 bicycles, so we moved that to E.B. Park also.

Both the Walk and the Bike were challenging because they required participants to walk the 3-4 miles through the state park trails, (which really make these event unique.) LWSP crews worked extra hard each year to make the trails passable for a thousand people, (half of them pushing bicycles,) and, with TTL volunteers, help participants over the dam. Storms damaged the trail so much some years, that we had to forget about the park and just use a 15-mile “horseshoe” route – so disappointing.

- The 14-mile Paddle around the lake:
We always start this on the beach next to Dale’s, (sometimes with more than 70 kayaks and canoes!) And circle the lake clockwise. Participants must stay between the shore and the no-wake poles.
