What is Ayurveda and why do we teach it alongside yoga?
Ayurveda is an ancient system of living that originated in India alongside yoga. The word itself is often translated as “the science of life.”
At its heart, Ayurveda teaches something surprisingly practical:
What supports you is not always the same.
Your needs change with the seasons.
With your age.
With your environment.
With your stress level.
With the rhythms of your day and your life.
Ayurveda teaches us how to pay attention to those changes and respond accordingly through food, movement, rest, daily routines, breath, and the way we care for ourselves.
And this is one reason Ayurveda and yoga belong together.
Yoga teaches us to become more aware of ourselves.
Ayurveda helps us understand what to do with that awareness.
Instead of assuming everyone needs the same practice, Ayurveda asks: What is happening right now, and what would bring greater balance?
Some days your yoga practice may need to energize you.
Some days it may need to ground you.
Some seasons call for more movement. Others ask for more rest.
That same awareness can follow you off the mat and into the way you eat, sleep, work, move, and structure your days.
In a modern world that constantly asks us to override our bodies, ignore natural rhythms, stay productive, and keep going regardless of how we actually feel, Ayurveda offers another way:
Pay attention. Notice what is changing. Learn what supports you. Adjust.
That is Ayurveda.
And if you practice yoga, it is absolutely worth understanding the science that has accompanied it for thousands of years.

We tend to think about the body in pieces.
A tight hip. A sore shoulder. A stiff low back. A calf that never seems to loosen.
But fascia gives us another way to understand the body. Not simply as individual parts, but as an interconnected network of tissue that runs throughout us.
It surrounds and weaves through muscles, helps transmit force as we move, and is richly sensory. What happens in one area of the body doesn’t always exist in isolation from the rest.
That’s part of what makes working with fascia so interesting.
Myofascial release gives us an opportunity to slow down enough to explore those connections through pressure, movement and sensation. Paired with Yin, we can then take that awareness into longer-held shapes and notice how the body responds.
We explore this together once a month in Myofascial Release Yin with Sally.
This Sunday’s class only has a few spaces remaining if you’d like to join us.
100 North Ballard Avenue Suite B, our door is on Oak Street.
