Annual White Bass Run afternoon trip
Absolutely amazes me sometimes how many fish one creek can hold. All the deep holes in Rowlett Creek have a ton of fish in them. Limits everyday this year, and its easy using 4 pound line only -not six -not eight, 4 pound only & your catch ratio will definitely go up.
Started fishing at about 4 o’clock once we got to the water. Had our limit by about 5 PM already going home, hopefully traffic’s not too bad.
At the end of the trip, I started jumping the rest of my minnows since I caught about 3 pounds so I obviously had extra. Started chumming the water and started a little feeding frenzy in a group of Flyfisherman came up and instantly caught a fish in the surfacing fish. Got all National Geographic and stuff down there!

White Bass Spawning Run.
Good morning was relatively nonstop action about every minute or two not on fire but good. Once the sun hit the water, the bite slowed tremendously so we moved to a shady pocket and finished up the limit.

Easy limits. Minnows are king. A fish or a miss every cast today. Had to w**d through a couple d***s. The guys had a great time
l showed the tech needed on how to catch these fish in the creek systems as they were having trouble. But now they absolutely get it and I know they will catch fish tomorrow all on their own. We went through a couple barometric air pressure swings and I showed them why the fish have shut down and then the fishing started getting good again and the barometric pressure was starting to steady so they got to see that firsthand on what happens with the air pressure goes up more than .02 at a time. Will it steady out in five minutes or is it gonna be three hours? You never know. The other people down there, tossing jigs and rooster tails only had no more than six. So again, if you want to guaranteed limit, minnows are king

Lake Lavon Fishing Report - January 5, 2026
Took the kids out on Lake Lavon today because they were begging to catch a big catfish. We set up for drifting with cut shad trailed behind the boat at a super slow 0.3 mph, hoping for some channel or blue cats.
Almost immediately, I noticed schools of white bass (aka sandies) shadowing the boat—likely drawn in by the kids' excited chatter and boat noise. These curious fish stuck with us the whole trip!
The little one wanted to target the sandies, so we switched gears and dropped straight down. The action was nonstop! For over 2.5 hours, we rarely went more than 3-4 minutes without a fish on. The kids were absolutely worn out from reeling them in—every drop produced.
We missed a few solid takedowns on the catfish rods out back (probably due to oversized hooks), but keeping the kids hooked up and grinning was the priority.
Tried heavier 1-ounce slabs first, but the white bass ignored them. Switched to lighter creek/crappie setups: 4-pound line, 1/16 oz jig heads tipped with small flukes. The key? Position the jig right in front of their faces using live scope (drop into the transducer beam), give it a subtle twitch to grab attention, then slowly reel up.
**Pro Tip:** There's a "magic" retrieve speed—steady and gradual, like a baitfish casually swimming away (not fleeing). Too fast or too slow, and they'll ignore it. Once you dial it in, hookups are explosive!
Over 90% of our catch were fat females loaded with eggs, averaging 13 inches. This bodes well for a strong white bass spawn this spring.
No live scope? No problem—use traditional 2D sonar. Look for those telltale "spaghetti lines" (schools of sandies) directly under the transducer and drop straight down. Twitch, slow reel, repeat.
Light 4-pound line held up fine (proper drag set)—we didn't lose a single fish, even to some bigger ones. Boat noise helps a ton: Use a thumper or splasher to attract these curious sandies underneath you.
If a 9- and 10-year-old can hammer them like this, anyone can! Get out there—the sandies are schooled up and aggressive right now.
Tight lines! 🎣

Lake Trip Report:
It was way too windy for me to go north so we drifted from one side to the other out in front of the spillway. Started on the north end and used my Trolling Motor to pull us to the other side into the wind at .03-.06 miles an hour. The little one pulled into the first fish within the first 15 minutes. Then it was a fish pretty much every 10 to 15 minutes on average or a takedown or we would reel one in and lose one but there was this one particular spot we doubled up at so it is a mental note. The next time we drifted by the same spot we doubled up again, so I spot locked, and we sat there and pretty much filled the cooler with eaters and released some 12-15’s. They were traveling along the underwater shelf at 25 foot. Nothing above that ledge and they were no more than 40 yards from the drop off so pretty much only two rods could even fit in that little area they were held up in. But it was fun hearing the clickers scream when the fish picks it up and runs. Using cut monster gizzard shad cut in 3 inch slices.
