September 14 — While Some Are Sighting In, Others Are Clearing the Way!

As many hunters head out to sight in their guns in anticipation of that big buck crossing their path, hundreds of dedicated volunteers will be out doing something just as important—trimming brush, clearing trails, repairing signs, and getting Michigan’s trail system ready for what comes next.

❄️ In just two months, many of us will begin the annual SNOW DANCE! 💃❄️

But great trails don’t magically appear when the snow falls. The work starts long before winter.

If your local snowmobile or ORV club is holding a trail workday, consider lending a hand. You might make a new friend, find a future riding buddy, and gain a whole new appreciation for what it takes to prepare and maintain the trails we all enjoy.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the families forever changed, and the heroes who ran toward danger when others were trying to escape.

We remember the first responders, service members, volunteers, and everyday Americans whose courage and compassion reminded us of the strength found in standing together.

Twenty-five years later, may we continue to honor their memory—not only with our words, but through unity, kindness, service, and gratitude for the freedoms we share.

Looking Ahead

Section 305 should be viewed not as the end of the conversation, but as the beginning of a stronger partnership between the Legislature, the Department of Natural Resources, local grant sponsors, and Michigan's recreation community.

As implementation moves forward, transparency in budget reporting and clear documentation of administrative expenditures will be essential to demonstrating compliance with both the letter and the intent of the boilerplate language.

Michigan's snowmobile and ORV communities have invested generations of volunteer service and financial support into building one of the premier trail systems in North America. Section 305 recognizes that commitment by affirming a simple but important principle:

Restricted user funds should remain dedicated to the users and the programs that generated them.

MISORVA is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to protecting and promoting motorized recreation in Michigan.

Back in 2003, several prominent MSA members had a vision: create a permanent snowmobile trail system in Michigan.

One little dream became another mission.

They worked with elected officials, partnered with DNR leaders, helped establish the program in state statute, and formed the Snow Country Trails Conservancy (SCTC) to help secure permanent snowmobile trail access.

Today, that vision is still paying dividends.

$8 from every Michigan snowmobile registration is dedicated to securing permanent trail access — and those dollars have already helped purchase more than 200 miles of permanent snowmobile trails.

What started with a group of volunteers sitting around a table asking, “How do we protect these trails for the future?” became something generations of riders can benefit from.

More than 200 miles protected.
Permanent access.
A vision that started more than 20 years ago.

That is what advocacy, volunteers, partnerships, and a long-term vision can accomplish.

They weren't just building trails for themselves. They were protecting them for the riders who would come next.
