Dear Friends,
Happy Thanksgiving!!
I am so blessed to have people like all of your as my guests and customers. Thank you so much for being a part of my life, I feel so fortunate to be able to spend time out on the water with good people. Thank you.
As for the fishing this summer 2019... It was a pretty good year, again. With regards to the halibut, it seems the stocks are building nicely. I ended the season this year all the way into November, and caught large halibut most every day of the season. Halibut fishing is getting easier each year as of late, which tells me stocks are doing well. Seems halibut fishing is just getting better every year as of late, and the only bottleneck would be the stormy weather we sometimes get in the fall.
The silvers stayed offshore this year, but in the same timeframe as usual. Late July-early September. We did not get many silvers near shore at all this year, nor did the commercial trollers. However, the netters around the rivers did well. This flip flop of success is pretty normal. Another version is when the water is clear enough for the silvers to see the troll gear, and they are near shore, the trollers bonkem pretty well, and the nets don’t get as many. What I am concerned with however, and we saw it this year, is the warmer water changing swim patterns, messing with my sport fishing, as well the warmer water impacting the smolts as they are more temperature sensitive. We saw the sockeye run last year heavily impacted all over the state, likely due to smolt die off.
Another good note is that the lings are on the rebound. We did better as the season went along. Seems early there were not lings on every spot like in years past, and we have to target in order to produce. As the season went along, I did notice fish on more spots around Yakutat Bay. I especially appreciate how each region is managed locally, and that is why we see slightly different slot sizes and bag limits than in other places. Seemed best Ling fishing was July this year.
Overall, this year was marked by oddly, “San Diego” like weather. It was so pleasant to not have a rainy-windy year. I wonder is it will be a trend.
Again, Thanks to all of you. Best regards and warm holiday wishes,
Mark
