MYTH: "M855 green tip is the military's dedicated armor-piercing round." Not quite. The U.S. military calls M855 a 5.56 mm ball cartridge with a steel penetrator; its separately designated armor-piercing load is M995.

The green paint identifies M855's 62-grain projectile. A small steel insert in its nose improves performance against some light barriers and helmets compared with older ball ammunition. That does not make every piece of body armor an easy target, and the military label is not a guarantee about what a specific plate will stop.

Part of the confusion came from civilian law, not just the metal inside the bullet. The ATF treated M855 projectiles differently from completed cartridges for years, and a 2015 proposed change made headlines without taking effect. In 2026 the agency expressly exempted both the cartridges and their projectiles from the federal armor-piercing-ammunition definition for sporting purposes.

So "steel penetrator," military "ball" and a federal legal classification describe different questions. Where did you first hear the green-tip claim?
