Music is fun and creative, but it also has rules. The key to being able to write and perform music is understanding what those rules are, and how those rules work.
Think of baseball (or any sport for that matter). Before you can play baseball, you have to understand the rules and fundamentals, after that, you just need to practice. Music is the same way. Once you have a firm grasp on the rules and fundamentals of music, with enough practice you can do anything!
The # 1 problem with music lessons today is a lack of emphasis on learning basic music theory, which limits your ability to progress musically, then leads to frustration and eventually a complete loss of interest in music altogether.
The desire to teach music fundamentals stems from my own personal experience with inadequate guitar lessons as a young man. I was frustrated and ready to give up, but once I applied my prior knowledge of music theory to the guitar, it enabled me to develop as a musician and song writer. That was more than 16 years ago and my passion for music is as strong as ever!
Let’s go back to our baseball analogy for a moment. Imagine you learn how to swing the bat, but you don’t know what direction to run once you hit the ball. No matter how much you love the game, it would be near impossible to play without knowing the rules.
I believe that a strong musical foundation leads to a passion for creating and performing music that will last a lifetime!
