This week on food plot Friday we will be talking about Cereal Rye. Cereal Rye is another good soil builder. When it comes to a healthy thriving food plot, the soil is the foundation upon which they are built. Cereal Rye has a large root system and deep tap roots and offshoots that allow it to mine nitrogen and potassium from deep in the soil, bringing it close enough to the surface for future plantings of shallow-rooted plants to benefit from. This deep tap root system makes cereal rye good in areas with drier winters and will allow the plant to spring back to life once the ground thaws early in the spring before many other plants grow. Since it bounces back so early in the spring this plant will help combat and choke out weeds in the plot. It also creates a lot of organic matter in the soil which acts as a reservoir of nutrients which is released into the soil slowly as the decomposition process takes place. Organic matter functions like a sponge and will help keep the soil from drying out as fast in the warm summer months. Higher levels of Organic Matter also help to reduce erosion of the soil. Cereal Rye produces up to 25% crude protein when grown in the proper growing environments. This plant is a prime candidate for the no till method. It will leave a lot of mulch on the ground if you allow it to grow tall without mowing. It's important to note, Deer will not eat the seed heads on the rye plant like they do on wheat plants. The plant will become unpalatable if you allow it to grow to tall, mow to allow fresh tender growth to grow. Cereal Rye likes a least 6 hours of sun a day and thrives in a pH range of 5.0 to 7.0.
