Welp I did just about everything wrong that you can do. I missed spares, threw the wrong ball and still had a chance to make the cut but didn’t. Carry was rough. I did shoot 289 for the second year in a row in this tournament, which was good enough for second place in the jackpot to a 300.
Lanes 11&12 in this house were a nightmare game four. Very disappointed, but I’m not in tournament shape right now if we’re being honest. As always thanks to Vise for supporting me on the lanes! Onto the next one.

Bowling in the Akron Open tomorrow. I’ve had a lot of success at Station 300 in Akron and I’m hoping the pins cooperate. First big tournament of the bowling season. Let’s go!!!!!!!

Let’s talk bowling ball plugging for a moment. I remember growing up and getting hand me down bowling balls that were plugged and re-drilled. Although we still do a ton of this in pro shops, I would like to make you aware of a couple things regarding ball plugging.

Swiss Cheese!!!! I personally do not like to plug and re-drill a ball multiple times for several reasons. Other than the aesthetics, multiple plug jobs on a bowling ball can severely weaken the cover-stock and make it prone to cracking. Re-drilling holes next to existing plug can also make the ball prone to cracking. The bridge between the fingers cracks quite often after a plug and re-drill. Trying to find a good spot to drill after plugging can be difficult as well. You can drill through the old plug but if the new hole is too close to the old plug, it’s gonna crack and plugging a ball voids the warranty.

I have also been known to refuse to drill into someone else’s plug job because God knows what I’m going to drill into. I’ve drilled into everything from play-doh and foam spray to a roll of nickels that destroyed my drill bit and almost killed me. If I don’t know who plugged it, then I’m probably not going to drill into the old plug for my own safety.

Plugging a ball definitely has its purposes. Pitch changes, span changes or layout adjustments are the main ones.

I’m always willing to look at a ball and tell you what I think. Sometimes it’s as easy as plugging and moving a thumb hole and other times it’s not worth the effort of plugging and moving everything because the ball has been drilled so many times, the structural integrity of the ball has been compromised. You have to remember each time you drill a performance ball, some of the core is drilled out with it. This can drastically change the dynamics of the ball.

Ball plug is also around $300 a gallon for the two part mixture (and you thought gas was expensive), so it’s not gonna be a cheap fix in most cases.

I understand some bowling balls have sentimental meaning and I’m always willing to work with you. This is just an educational post so that when you see that great deal on eBay and think it’s going to be an easy fix, it might not be that easy.
