Today we remember Chojun Miyagi Sensei (1888–1953), the founder of Goju Ryu Karatedo, whose teachings continue to inspire and unite martial artists across the world.

Born in Naha, Okinawa, Miyagi Sensei dedicated his life to refining the art he inherited from Kanryo Higaonna. He blended the strong, rooted power of Okinawan Naha te with the softer, flowing movements he studied in China, creating a system that balanced Go (hard) and Ju (soft), a philosophy that extended far beyond combat and into everyday life.

In 1933, Goju Ryu became the first Okinawan style to receive official recognition from the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai, marking a defining moment in karate history. Through his discipline, humility and vision, Miyagi Sensei laid the foundation for generations of practitioners to follow.

His influence continues through every student who bows at the start of class, through every kata performed with intent, and through every dojo that carries his legacy forward. Whether you train under Goju Ryu, Goju Kai, or any of the many branches that trace their roots to his teachings, we are all part of the same family tree.

The strength of Goju Ryu lies in our differences, yet our hearts are united in gratitude for the art Miyagi Sensei gave us. 🥋🙏🏼

It takes a village to raise a child, and at Rose Martial Arts Academy, we believe we have a responsibility to be part of that village.

We want our students to know they have people in their corner who believe in them, challenge them to grow, and encourage them when things get hard. Through martial arts, children learn more than techniques. They build confidence, discipline, respect, and resilience. They learn to keep trying when something is difficult, take responsibility for their choices, and treat others with kindness.

These lessons reach far beyond the dojo. They help shape the people our students are becoming.

We’re proud to partner with parents and families, helping raise children who are confident in who they are, strong in character, and ready to face life’s challenges.

Because martial arts is about more than what a child can do on the mat. It’s about who they become along the way.

We sure were grateful we were able to attend the last Karate College this past summer! We are excited to honor Joe Lewis this next year!

Our dear friend and mentor Joe Lewis passed away in the summer of 2012. We would indeed be remiss if we didn't celebrate Joe's life in the summer of 2027, fifteen years after his passing. Last year (2026) we retired Karate College so this would be an encore presentation camp to be held in June 25-26, 2027 at the Radford Recreation Center AKA Karate College. The fact that the numbers 25-26-27 align just right must mean something special is going to happen. Hope we can see everyone together at least one more time. We will post more information later.
