I'm honored and humbled to have been kicked into 4th degree over the weekend by the head of the United Kenpo Systems and Senior Master of the Arts Bryan Hawkins.
I've heard many of my Seniors mention the additional responsibility that comes with higher and higher rank. It is not a magic strip of cloth that suddenly makes things easier. In fact, the darker the belt gets, and the more red it eventually attracts, the more you realize there is to learn. It sounds cliché, but it is true.
I taught at the West LA school for nearly 7 years starting as a 3rd brown up until 3rd degree black when I moved back to Ohio. I took that responsibility seriously, and always did my best. That said, when I opened my own school in January of 2023, I began to feel the full weight of leading and doing my best to give my students the best I have to offer. There is support from the UKS, which is awesome, but day to day, I must make sure my students are taken care of to the fullest extent. It is a load to bear. One that I am honored and do my best to carry.
There's a lot of weight to carry in that thin black strap... a kick and an additional thin stripe of red later, I can tell you that the heft of responsibility is now even greater.
Thank you to my wife, family, and friends for all of your support.
To my teachers, I will do my best to impart that which you taught me.
To my students present and future, I will do my best to guide you to become a better Martial Artist than I'll ever be.
Salute,
Ian Lauer S.I.
