Sandringham Yacht Club’s Annual Challenge Kids Day on the Bay
Last Sunday, Sandringham Yacht Club had the pleasure of hosting the annual Challenge Kids Day on the Bay for 2024.
In warm sunny weather, just on 200 kids and their families enjoyed a joy ride on 35 volunteer boats provided by SYC members. Everyone was taken for a joy ride and a bit of fun on Port Phillip Bay.
Challenge is an amazing organisation that supports kids with cancer and their families and they do a brilliant job. SYC is proud to have been supporting this organisation for over 25 years.
Prior to the boating activity, the club was a hive of activity as everyone gathered to enjoy a delicious BBQ cooked by our enthusiastic volunteers. Families were then allocated into groups, the kids were fitted with life jackets, introduced to their allocated skipper and headed off to their allocated boats for a fun day on the water. The boats headed off in all directions to enjoy the experience of sailing/boating. Many of these families had never been on a boat before, so it was a very special experience. A special mention to the organiser and SYC member Robyn Coombs.

Starting today J80 World Championship at

The Galician fishing village of Baiona will host the J80 Sailing World Championship in 2023, following in the wake of the other J80 World Championships previously held in Spain, in Santander (2009), Sotogrande (2016) and Getxo (2019).

This new world championship awarded to Spain will undoubtedly be a unique opportunity to consolidate a class that is already one of the most numerous in the country, with around 200 units and very active fleets in Galicia, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Andalusia, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

Rolex China Sea Race organized by starts Wednesday 27 March 2024, taking competitors 565nm across the China Sea to Subic Bay in the Philippines. 2024 marks the 62nd anniversary of this biennial World Sailing Offshore Category 1 race run under the auspices of RORC.

As a blue water classic, the Race has it all; from a spectacular start in Hong Kong’s iconic Victoria Harbour, through lumpy and challenging conditions on the first night to the deep blue water as you near northern Philippines. Crews return year after year and look forward to a blast reach across the China Sea before transitioning into the tactically challenging Luzon Coast, before sailing up the pristine waters of Subic Bay to the finish. The net result is that many boats have a chance of lifting the trophy for IRC Overall - all depending on how they play their approach to the Philippines.
