🌋 Kick ’em Jenny — an underwater volcano just 8 km north of Grenada! 🇬🇩 Since its discovery in 1939, Kick ’em Jenny has erupted 14 times, most recently in August 2017. Because the volcano’s summit is about 646 feet (197 m) below the surface, scientists believe the risk of a significant tsunami from an eruption is relatively low — she’s simply very deep. So, that’s the good news! But there’s another fascinating (and slightly terrifying!) phenomenon. Kick ’em Jenny periodically “off-gasses,” releasing huge amounts of volcanic gases into the surrounding seawater. The resulting bubbles can dramatically reduce the density of the water within roughly a 3 km radius of the volcano. In these conditions, the water can become incapable of providing enough buoyancy to support a vessel. And no… you definitely wouldn’t want to go swimming there! 😳 When we were travelling down to Grenada, we deliberately skirted around this area. Kick ’em Jenny is continuously monitored, and a restricted zone is established around the volcano when activity increases. There’s also a fascinating — and rather eerie — piece of maritime history associated with her. Over the years, there have been reports of vessels disappearing in the region without obvious debris or evidence of a conventional sinking. This has led to speculation that some may have inadvertently entered the area during an episode of intense gas release. Whether those disappearances were actually caused by Kick ’em Jenny remains unproven — but the science behind the phenomenon is very real. A major safety warning has been issued for 84,000 full-face snorkel masks sold online.

Regulators say the masks could cause breathing problems that may lead to drowning. Owners are being told to stop using them immediately.
