We were devastated this week to hear of Sam Welch's passing. Not only was Sam the kind of friend you call family, but he was also one of the very first members of Blue Water Divers' crew - a true original. Our favourite story of Sam from those days was when a film star ventured into the dive shop and Sam asked, 'Are you the real Robert De Niro, or a Robert De Niro look alike?' On confirmation that it was the real Robert De Niro, Sam offered his hand and said, 'Well how do you do, I'm the real Sam Welch.'

Back in the days of yore, when Sam and Muffy were still bachelors, they were also roommates. Given Muffy's utter lack of domestic survival skills, it was often joked that Sam was Muffy's butler. Indeed, in those days, Sam saved him from dehydration, starvation, and many a potential house fire.

In truth, there are far too many wonderful memories to recount here, so instead we will say this; words cannot express how much we already miss you. Our community shines a little dimmer without your light and our knowledge will be a little duller without your random factoids. Wherever you venture next, may the road rise up to meet you and may the wind be always at your back. Until we meet again, Godspeed.

Throwback Thursday

DID YOU KNOW that Blue Water Divers was involved in the filming of the 1992 film, Muppets Treasure Island? True story! The camera was set up on our vessel, Aja Blue, and we filmed a bow wave off of Husky Tow and Salvage's boat which was then doctored through film magic to look like a pirate vessel. We're not sure which silver tongued crew member was able to talk Production into coming all the way over from England to get that shot, but they did! Unfortunately, no muppets were required for this scene (except the ones on our boat). Muffy was devastated - he really wanted to meet Kermit.

Kyle is feeling fine with his shiny new spine!

For those of you who do not know, Kyle has been suffering from two massively herniated discs and waiting on spinal surgery since February of this year. As unbelievable as it sounds, he's pain free and up and walking just one day after his surgery!

A massive thank you to Dr. Liburd and the staff at Andrews Memorial Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica as well as Colleen and staff at Bougainvillea Clinic - and of course, Dr. Bain, for all of their efforts and the incredible work they have done to get him back on his feet.

We'll be ensuring he takes it easy for the time being, but hoping to splash him before the end of the year and he should definitely be back to getting you lost on the many dive sites of the BVI by next season!

We would also like to take the time to thank our wonderful crew who have been holding down the fort, and of course our customers for being so understanding throughout this period.

We can see clearly now the pain is gone, and here's to many, many adventures on the horizon!
