Mahi Mahi fishing tournament in the British Virgin Islands

Mahi Mayhem postponed new date to be confirmed.

Following a meeting with the fisheries department on Monday, we have been advised that previous tournament fees were not correctly applied and that there can be no exemptions to the law.

This would mean that each boat would have government fees of between $300 and $800 per team, on top of the tournament entry and other costs. Clearly the fees are way too high for a community based fishing tournament and as such until we can find an acceptable path forwards we will need to postpone.

Historically entry fees were $60 for local and $110 for foreign boats and we will lobby to have this rate applied for future tournaments.

We are extremely sad that at such late notice we were advised of the massive increase in costs. This post is not a criticism of either the government or fisheries department, both of which have tried to find a solution and feel as frustrated as we are. Clearly the COI and other factors have affected all government departments and we sympathise with the environment they have had to work under during the pandemic.

We are looking for ideas on when and how to hold the tournament, we want to do it this year for sure, its just how and when, ideas please! We will host at Nanny Cay, we will raise some money for the Irma funds and we will ensure there is a prize pool.

We are currently in discussions on how we can hold the tournament this year. We will speak to all of the stakeholders but at this point in time we think a one day tournament will work the best given the number of boats and marinas which suffered due to Irma and Maria.
