Revered as the ‘king of mantises,’ Idolomantis diabolica has an appearance that closely resembles flowers. This is also a tactic it uses to lure prey into its trap—simply waiting with its mouth open for the perfect catch.

The plant is a perennial herb. Its rhizome lies just below the ground. Leaves grow from the rhizome, with long petioles measuring 30–50 cm. The leaf blade is heart-shaped, elongated, entire, and smooth; the upper surface is glossy green while the underside is lighter green. The flowers are purple, flaring out like a spittoon-shaped tube, growing singly at the base of the leaf stalk. Flowering and fruiting season: April to June.
