What is Ving Tsun / Wing Chun?
Original purposes:
Wing Chun (Ving Tsun) originated in ancient China out of the necessity for individuals to both carry out surprise attacks or assassinations and defend themselves against them. Their opponents were themselves trained assassins, bodyguards, or fighters. In this line of work, politically determined, one was in danger everywhere and at all times.
Concepts and techniqs:
The Wing Chun system's training methods and tecniqs themselves pursued a revolutionary approach for its time in China, in that muscular strength, athletic build, and acrobatic body control no longer played a decisive role. The aim was precisely to counter opponents with these attributes and abilities. Over time, this led to the myth that Wing Chun was developed by a woman. Wing Chun was and is not a sport. It is also not a collection of self-defense tricks, and it requires regular and intensive training. It is a craft, and as such, it demands diligence.
Benefits today:
The intelligent movement mechanics and close-combat concepts of Wing Chun are ideally suited for self-defense in todays everyday situations. Ongoing training gives people the opportunity to become more physically aware, more mentally active, and to experience joy in life through interactive movement, mostly in a playful, combative manner. The fundamentally logical structure of Ving Tsun trains critical thinking.

Beware of the mistakes!
This chart, very well known in Vietnam (often titled "Hands in Wing Chun" shows how the focus is placed on the hands, the wrists and partly the edge of the hand.
But this is completely wrong. This is not real Wing Chun. It no longer "simple, efficient and direct" (the iron concept of Wing Chun)
Some of the main criticisms. 1) such behavior distorts the distance in the exercises 2) has no structure and therefore no power 3) results in unrealistic fumbling and exaggerated trapping. 4) can easily miss the target 5) results in the well-known mistake "chasing hands" 6) does not contain any attack intention. In short, it is not suitable for realistic fighting and is therefore bad Wing Chun.
Rule of thumb: In Wing Chun it is not the hands that are important, but the elbow.
Deflection techniques 1) always go to the opponent's forearm or elbow, 2) are attack techniques on the opponent's central line.
In Chi Soa there are three techniques that show the correct behavior and therefore the correct use of the arms: B**g Sao, Taan Sao and F**k Sao. The center of the arm structure is at the elbow. The distance becomes shorter and thus automatically the correct close combat distance. And last but not least, this is the only way to learn the enormously important Lat Sau Jik Chung (springy energy).

…………….
In a SV (self defence) situation, you have to assume that the opponent is bigger, stronger and heavier, and that he can fight.
Only a few fighting systems in the world have specialised in self-defence and explicitly for such conditions. Ving Tsun is one of them. The most important characteristic of Ving Tsun is: it was not developed for sport but for real combat, as it only occurs in a self-defence situation. Ving Tsun exclusively teaches concepts and techniques that enable self-protection and the radical elimination of an opponent at the same time. This concept facilitates the learning of Ving Tsun in many ways: this includes the renunciation of acrobatic kicks as in Taekwondo, the use of complicated levers and throws as in Judo or Jiu Jitsu or explicit ground fighting as in BJJ. In order to simplify its own reactions, Ving Tsun focuses mainly on one type of punch and one type of kick. However, these attack techniques, a few other relatively simple hand techniques and intelligent footwork must be practised in conjunction with the special and time-consuming methods and drills of Wong Shun Leung Ving Tsun. On the whole, while it is easy to apply, it is not so easy to learn.
………………….
