– The FINIS Tech Toc is a simple training tool worn around the waist that provides instant stroke feedback and ensures proper hip position during all four swim strokes. The FINIS Tech Toc utilizes a ball bearing in a plastic capsule and acoustic amplifiers to create a sound as the device is tipped from side to side. This audible feedback prompts proper hip rotation and undulation. The Tech Toc also has a Delay Setting which delays the ball bearing, forcing swimmers to exaggerate hip rotation.

BREASTSTROKE - KICK WITH FINS
Hereapos;s a great way to add a new dimension to an old drill. Two-down, one-up breaststroke drill with fins!
Why Do It:
This drill teaches swimmers to understand the resistance the recovery of the legs creates during the kick, as well as working on extension out front, and timing of the breath. Adding the fins also teaches the swimmer exactly WHERE the kick grabs water and sends them forward.
How to Do It:
1. The only fin Iapos;ve found that works for this drill is the FINIS PDF (Positive Drive Fin). These little round fins really do a great job for breaststroke kicking.
2. Push off and start with a regular stroke of breaststroke.
3. When you get to extension, go under water and initiate a second breaststroke kick.
How to Do It Really Well (the Fine Points):
When youapos;re under water waiting for the second kick, make sure your body is flying flat... parallel to the surface of the water. Donapos;t dive too deep, and keep your head directly between your arms. Also FEEL where the fins catch the water. Your goal is to catch the water as high in the kick as possible, without creating resistance with your thighs. Try to ride out each kick as long as possible, and stretch your body to the other end with each forward extension of the arms.

ALL STROKES - MONOFIN SPRINTS
Sure, we all know the FINIS Foil Monofin is great for training the underwater dolphin, but thereapos;s another great use for it as well.
Why Do It:
With the use of the monofin, the entire body has no choice but to be integrated into the body-dolphin movement. Learning this is essential for the higher levels of the sport.
How to Do It:
1. Put on the monofin and try sprinting some butterfly. The monofin will slow the rhythm a bit because of increased surface area you have to push through the water. Try to get your arms going as fast as you can by demanding the body help push the monofin through.
2. Now try some sprint freestyle, Michael Klim style, with dolphin kick legs and fast arms.
3. Now give breaststroke a shot, but make sure youapos;re taking only one kick per armstroke. Some swimmers like to throw in 2 kicks, and this changes the intensity youapos;re going for.
How to Do It Really Well (the Fine Points):
We donapos;t want backstroke to be left out, so make sure you throw in some 360? dolphin rotation, or some dolphin on the back. For the rest of the strokes, just be intense.

ALL STROKES - SWIMMERS SNORKEL
Weapos;ve all either seen, or frequently use, a swimmerapos;s snorkel. Here are a couple points to focus on next time you strap one to your head.
Why Do It:
The FINIS Swimmerapos;s Snorkel is the best tool for keeping the head stable during swimming. When you take away the need to turn, or lift your head for air, you can focus on some very specific things.
How to Do It:
*** FREESTYLE ***
1. This is just a quick tip for freestyle. Of course where you look will be important, but this focus point is all about head stability along the length of your body.
2. As you swim, make sure your head remains perfectly centerlined. There should be no movement of the head from side to side. Once the eye position is set, keep it there.
*** BREASTSTROKE ***
1. Sweeping the hands out prior to lifting the head is one way to maximize the insweep to air in breaststroke. To learn this, focus on keeping the eyes down during the outsweep.
2. Youapos;re trying to gain the mastery of sweeping the hands out to the widest point (the corners), with the eyes still down. With the snorkel on, itapos;s much easier to accomplish this.
How to Do It Really Well (the Fine Points):
In freestyle, you can elevate the eyes just a bit, as our athlete is showing, to WATCH how your hands enter and extend forward. This allows you to monitor if your hands are crossing over during extension. The snorkel allows you to spend more time paying attention to this than just holding your breath.
In breaststroke, push yourself to stay as wide as possible with the eyes still down, and try not to add too much dolphin kick.
Youapos;ll notice that both swimmers are also wearing pull buoys, paddles, and ankle bands to further challenge themselve to not only rely solely upon their arms, but also to challenge the balance in freestyle.

BREASTSTROKE - FRONT SCULL
When National Team Member Brendan McHugh thinks about going FAST... he makes sure he focuses on the initial connection with the hands.
Why do it:
Front scull for breaststroke helps you find the angle that's just right between the upper and lower arm to make that early catch.
How to do it:
1 - Brendan uses a snorkel to make sure he can spend more time working on the feel of the connection without having to lift up for air.
2 - With the elbows in front of the shoulders, and the eyes down, sweep your forearms and hands back and forth.
3 - Adjust the pitch of your hands on the outsweep and insweep, so the palms are always pitched in the direction of the movement. Pitched out on the outsweep, and pitched in on the insweep.
How to do it really well (the fine points):
Keep the elbows stable, making sweeping movements ONLY from the forearms and hands. The arms should look like windshield wipers with little or no backward movement.
Use your eyes to check to make sure you can see the stable elbows and the sweeping of the hands, make a visual connection between the two... then put the head back in position and continue.
If you have a tough time keeping your hips and legs up, use a small dolphin, or you can use a pull buoy to further isolate the arms.

Freestyle - Building the Stroke
Spending time with the Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club, we had a chance to watch the group performing the following drill. The attention to detail was evident, and it was great to watch. Coach Matt Beckwith shared this with us, where he also said he'd borrowed it from Paul Yetter.
Why do it:
Building a solid freestyle starts with a solid foundation. This single length progression incorporated many facets of a great freestyle.
How to do it:
1 - Start by establishing your balance in a stationary position. Take your time and be patient. The use of a snorkel can be key here, as it allows you to be very patient.
2 - Slowly uncoil from a ball position, starting to initiate a slight kick to bring the legs up.
3 - Slowly move forward, starting to feel the water with your hands.
4 - Move to a larger sculling action, starting to build the pull.
5 - Slowly start to lift the elbow to a fingertip drag drill.
6 - Then to Stun Gun recover position, and finally some slow swimming.
How to do it really well (the fine points):
Build each component of the pull, while maintaining the bodyline that you set up at the beginning of the length. Don't rush from step to step just because you think it's next. Move forward with building the arm action ONLY after you know you're able to build each stop while maintaining the bodyline.
We love the slow, steady, and thoughtful progress this swimmer is making, and it was great watching an entire team go through this without hurry or rush.
